COVID-19: South Africa fighting back against variant

'We can't leave Africa to deal with this virus on its own' - the warning today from one of the South African scientists who discovered the virulent new COVID strain.

It is now spreading across the country and onward into neighbouring states.

Close to 42,000 people have died with coronavirus in South Africa, and hospitals are filling up.

Sky's Africa Correspondent John Sparks sent this report from Durban, South Africa.

Yeah we trade with both U.S and China and there is no instance of a country in Africa that has flourished under capitalist system, it's not for us clearly. They know we drifting away so somehow such things are going to arise being portrayed in a negative narrative.

All of a sudden we the origins. Because a lab in South Africa conducting tests detected it and we one of a hand full of countries in the world that has such facilities.

A rational person would assume other countries have strains that haven't been detected. But it suits they narrative.
