I once heard a priest relate Purgatory to a mudroom. To be accepted into God's house, that is heaven, we must be pure. To get into any house, we must pass through a mudroom and be cleansed to be allowed into a house. The process to cleanse oneself can take a long or short time, depending on how dirty we are. Simplistic, yes, but easy to comprehend. Personally, I work on that process daily hoping my time between death and life is short.

I recite the prayer of St. Gertrude the great as often as I can every day and especially when passing a cemetery. I also offer them during the Eucharistic sacrifice during every mass as Fr.
