There's a big gulf between an unboxing and a full review, and we're always looking for ways to fill it. Our friendly neighborhood FedEx man dropped the Sony Xperia Tablet Z on our porch this morning, whereupon we promptly tore, cut, and otherwise fought our way into its packaging - all to give our fellow geeky voyeurs a rough idea of what the first few moments of Tablet Z ownership are like.

It only took a few minutes to log in to our various accounts and start personalizing the Z - and it took even less time to start generating some opinions on the tablet's hardware and software. And though these impressions are rough, immature, and very likely to change, they're still worth something in the here and now. Especially for those of you hungry for information about the thin, light, water-resistant Android tablet we first glimpsed way back in Barcelona.

I have the Sony Xperia Z tablet and its amazing! The new jelly bean update has really improved the speed and fluidity. My only problem with the tablet is that it picks up a lot of fingerprints and depending on lighting, the screen can sometimes be prone to a lot of glare. Those can be easily sorted out anyway with a HQ anti glare screen protector. Apart from that the tablet is awesome!

Since I saw the unboxing and reviews from other channels, I did notice some lag issues on the homescreen. Was it just me? Lookin forward for the full review on that before I decide to buy one or not.

Gorgeous hardware. With an AOSP-based ROM this should make for an absolutely great package.

I own a P6800 and I prefer it over the iPad. It is sturdy but light. Form factor is perfect for my needs, the screen may have lower resolution but it is Super Amoled Plus with amazing colors and blacks. Battery life is outstanding with the new Jelly Bean update and performance wise I have no complaints. People usually complain about the lack of apps, I don´t, the ones available suit my needs perfectly. So I guess it is what it is, a matter of opinion and perspective.

You know resolution isn't the only factor of a display quality, just compare the Xperia Z's display to the One X's. The iPad 4's display is brighter and colors are more realistic, not to mention there's more surface area thanks to the aspect ratio. And the iPad 4 doesn't have lightbleed issues, a friend of mine had to exchange his nexus 10 twice before he got one without the issue

it looks like xperia jelly bean kalender still has the issue where all your calendars have the same colour and you can't tell the entries apart by that. is that true?

my husband is planning on getting an Xperia tablet z for my birthday and also ordering the charging cradle but I read where the charging cradle doesn't come with a power cord {not sure how to use it without one} and I can't find anywhere to order one), Can you help me so I can use the charging cradle right away when I get it?
