Monmouth County's coastline begins in the north at Sandy Hook, and sprawls south to Manasquan Borough. By the early 1800s, small fishing villages had begun to develop along the coast. By mid-century, many of these small settlements, with names like Long Branch, Sea Bright, and Ocean Grove, were attracting thousands of visitors and vacationers, and developing into seaside resort towns.

By the 1880s, wealthy vacationers from New York and Philadelphia were turning these towns into new playgrounds for the rich, giving them names like Spring Lake, Avon-by-the-Sea, and Atlantic Highlands. A small fishing and crabbing community called Ocean Beach, would be renamed Belmar, the French word for "Beautiful Sea". Prestigious, grand hotels were being built in Asbury Park, Sea Girt, and Bradley Beach.

High society had arrived at the Jersey Shore.

This is so incredibly interesting. I've lived in Monmouth County all my life and have finally taken the time to learn the history around me after moving to the beautiful Atlantic Highlands and it's fascinating. So much rich history that I never knew about, I've spent a lot of time seeking out photos of old postcards to see what certain areas looked like and it's incredible to see their transformation.

I appreciate you taking the time to make this video! It was very interesting, and there isn't enough information about Monmouth County's history online, in my opinion.

Beautifully portrayed bringing back personal memories as a child growing up in the 60's and 70's in Spring Lake. A very informative history of development of the Jersey Shore. It is a shame to have seen the loss of our cultural heritage by the demolition of the finest architectural marvels, I witnessed, as a young teenager the removal of the majestic Monmouth Hotel. and as I just discovered an hour ago the Warren Hote lin 2001. I have been away for many years and do not wish to return knowing that Spring lake was defaced by not preserving its historic and cultural heritage. Glad i am not there to witness its desecration
