Always amazed at his guitar playing, if you're a player yourself, you realize, just how dynamic and intricate, what he's playing is, it's really masterful, and so pleasing to the ear, it just flows, like water. I also love his songwriting and voice. Truly an all around master, of telling a story, through music.

I think it's not an exaggeration to say that this man is the greatest American singer/songwriter ever.

This version of the song is bad ass. The original is awesome and he could have just played it the same way, but I like that he changed it up. It’s stripped down and simpler in some ways, but still complex and he still tells that great story in song. Top notch stuff.

What a performer, he makes this song seem like he just walked out of a coal mine. I like this version and Patty’s version both the same cause each brings a little different feel to it but yet both brilliantly done.

Harlan... that's where I trace my bloodline. Very strange to walk though the grave yards and see you name on a headstone. Had lunch with the Mayor who was distant kin from a century ago. An odd and unique experience.

On KDHX 88.1, our local independent station here in St. Louis. You can hear great real stuff like this on this radio station, all day Sat. and Sun. Give them a listen. When did Darrel write this song? Anyone know?

Good Version. It doesn't have to be coal or mining, I've seen lumber producing company towns that are at least as rough as Harlan.
