In this episode of the Perspective Prog. based on Rapid Urbanisation: Opportunities & Challenges. India is the second largest urban system in the world with almost 11% of the total global urban population living in Indian cities. In absolute numbers, the urban population in India is more than highly urbanised countries/regions across the globe. The country has reached a turning point in its journey of its economic transformation wherein half of the country would be ‘urban’ in a few decades. Urban growth is expected to contribute to 73% of the total population increase by 2036. Urbanisation is Central to India’s Economy. For India to become a global player, Urban India needs to take a giant leap with Indian cities being well-prepared for dealing with current challenges and a competitive future. Several bottlenecks and impediments such as lack of availability of serviced land, traffic congestion, pressure on basic infrastructure, extreme air pollution, urban flooding, water scarcity and droughts have been restricting urban planning capacity in the country. Over the last few years various programs have been launched to tackle the challenges and make appropriate use of opportunities in the urban development.

Guests:
1. Prof. P.S.N. Rao, Director, School of Planning and Architecture
2. Jaya Dhindaw, Director, Integrated Urban Planning, WRI India
3. Anand Menon, Vice President, Agra Smart City Ltd, Uttar Pradesh

Continued....
First, urbanisation is one of the domain of job formation and the reason why people today migrating there .
Second and the most important thing is facilities that we get from this, like proper schooling, health facilities, goods availability, etc
Third, apart from schools, hospitals, goods availability etc we also get infrastructure facilities like better roadways, metros thus proper transportation.
All these facilities is thus demanding the need of rapid urbanisation but we have challenges on ther side of the same coin as well.
First challenge is pollution that has always been a hub in big cities especially if we talk about our own capital delhi which is in a serious pain by pollution especial in winter the smog makes things more worse . Tackling this problem not through air purifying towers which is prevalent now but green space is tye first thing that we need to look on before creating any kind of urban projects
Second is again pollutants in different public spaces which drags the public health more . Dumping of wastage in river is a major cause of it . So waste management is the second challenge in front of us if we talk about proper urban projects.
Third which is a major thing, education and health facilities that is a definition of urban areas. But that should not be made sude by side because that somewhere create problems for both sides . Schools and hospitals should be made in the region where less crowd could take place.
Fourth as I mentioned about crowd management, wide roads with two ways side by side is something we should look on . Walkable spaces and parking facilities is something a needy portion for proper balance of urban areas.
Management is something that is required especially from administration level with responsibility to citizens keeping in mind can give a fruit laden results.
Agreement and suggestions from public must be there and especial emphasis on sustainability because we can't ignore climate change action. Green space is a dire need. We know that how important the urbanisation is so why not we make something that is permanently suitable and sustainable for people . Let we make the world environmentally protected without loosing the actual nature for fresh air .

URBAN FORMATION

India, well known for its agriculture priority nation and one of the largest producer of some agri products is somewhere demanding a kind of growth of urban region to cater the need of people. The rapid growth of population signals on the way to move up from agro based to urbanisation as well because we know what the importance is of urbanisation.
Mahatma Gandhi always said that india is a country of villagers but now the scenario is changing, we can say that urbanisation is gonna support 76 percent of population in the country by 2036 and we also know the fact that india now have 11 percent of world urban population in indian cities so its the need to expedite the same for the perspective of public welfare and development of the nation as a whole.
Before moving on the challenges we are getting forward in this way, let we see what are the opportunities that we are getting through urbanisation.
to be continued...

Looking at the rapid urbanization it looks scary. The amount of alienation would be huge. Its true that jobs get created through development in construction, transport etc. But managing large cities is also very tough most of the time goes in travelling and the cost of living will also go up so its not just creating jobs for the name of creating them but more contentful jobs should be created. So developing semi urban areas and also villages is very important for the development to be sustainable as in these areas interaction levels between people will be more so they are more sustainable. I also feel that the cities we are building all look alike but previously like Charminar in Hyderabad, and Red Fort in Delhi, Eiffel Tower in Paris, so one city looks different from another city because of these. So if we should try and create some creative jobs like involving artisans in construction industry. So that one city would look different from another city. Urbanization is a reality which we cannot avoid but with a human face.

India lives in villages as per MK Gandhi. There are more than six lakh villages are in India.

BR Ambedkar's thoughts on indian villages.
Indian villages are flourish castism more aggressively as compare to cities and home of percussion of Dalits.
Ambedkar’s famous quote on villages when he had reasoned, “The love of the intellectual Indian for the village community is of course infinite, if not pathetic…What is a village but a sink of localism, a den of ignorance, narrow mindedness and communalism”, is valid even today .

Indeed People centric + sustainable development this two factor responsible for urban opportunities in a holistic way but another one is corruption free work during developmental work for urbanisation also needed

Discussion is right way but think about Village Level and Agriculture. If urbanisation will be rapid then who will work in Agriculture. Need of Food will decrease how can we survive.
