Every leak I seal up in my 98 year old house pays me money from the moment I close it off. I can smell the savings!! I'm always working on lowering the cost to keep this place warm. It's my favorite hobby.

Have watched a few different HVAC repair videos in preparation for my own fix in our crawlspace; this was the most helpful ones.
As payment, I am leaving the obligatory comment for the almighty algorithm to consume

I was really happy to see and listen to this! I called an HVAC business for help in sealing the duct from my wood burning furnace. They said they couldn't help me because their insurance would not allow them to work on wood or fuel oil systems. So finding this video and knowing what product to use and how to seal the joints saved me!! THANKS!!

Hey Michael, thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent tutorial and demonstration on how to properly seal duct joints. Your comments on the five reasons for properly sealed ductwork was really on point.

I'm in the UK where NONE has ducted air heating, but I do. Its freek'in cold here and I couldn't work out why the house was cold 5mins after the heating went off. Just looked in the loft (attic) and there was a slit hole ona join that was 18x1" - !!!
I just wedged foam rubber sheet around the duct for now, what a difference! The house is warmer imediately.
Many thanks for the video, as I watched it the coin dropped. I've been freezing for weeks! Happy Christmas dude!!! :D

Just did 8 runs in my crawlspace, decided to take all the duct tape off before hand. It was all old crusty and dusty. Used mastic paste and fibertape. Talk about some physical work phew....

Good to know there are different types of tape. I have bought tape based only being aluminum, not whether it was mastic tape or not...

The newest mechanical code regulations, supported by ACCA, require that mastic be used to seal all duct connections/joints either directly on the joints or on top of approved (181) silver tape. The mastic itself effectively seals joints and, when used on taped joints, helps prevent oxidation from loosening the taped joints.

Watched a lot of your videos, but you should take it down to the kd (knock down metal) and seal it with dyna seal

Mike, thanks. I’m going to order some tape for the metal ducts and the insulated ducting and will be patching wherever I can. Also, I didn’t know you were a snake wrangler too!!

That attic insulation looks quite sparse and uneven. That is a critical factor regarding overall comfort in the home and heating/cooling efficiency. Also the fiberglass blown insulation actually has a lower R-value than cellulose. Things to think about.

Hey mike on work squeegee, lol. Great video, what did you do to the insulation wrap before you taped it, did you wipe it down with something. Another suggestion is spray glue before you tape works really well. Rick from Illinois

Don't forget that your energy company gives out good rebates for this work, even if you DIY. That's why I'm out here to get the terminology down so I can qualify for the whole amount.

Nice corn snake you found there at the end of the video!

I am currently sealing my circular ducts using duct puddy to fill in openings and cracks and then applying foil tape (I believe you call it mastic tape in this video) on top of that. There will be a thin layer of insulating wrap applied after that part is complete.

Here metal ducting already installed. But what's your thought's on a rigid PCV or ABS square ventilation duct, rather than metal ducting?
The reason I ask is that this type of ventilation flat duct can be used with self seal connectors.
So mastic tape doesn't need to be used to seal the joints. and you don't have metal seams that can also attribute to some air loss.
