Intro got a nice lol from me. Butane seems like a reasonable substitute to me, I mean as far as I know refrigerants are all flammable anyways so it makes sense.
Besides, it's fairly tame when cold like you said. I've taken paper towel balls and soaked them in liquid butane and then bounced them around like a game of hot potato. The fire from burning butane feels a lot colder than most gasses.

Propane is a compatible replacement for R22/134a. Ideally the oil would be replaced and the system triple-evacuated, but it's not essential.

Propane is probably a better and cheaper source of refrigerant for future reference

Okay maybe I'm misinformed, but isn't the whole point of R134 that it isn't bad for the atmosphere and stuff when it gets released?

It’s cool that you can use something that’s not refrigerant. And don’t worry about the snowflakes not liking you leaking refrigerant into the atmosphere. And I mean it’s probably not great for the atmosphere, but things happen.
