Did You Know? - The Sign

A sign cyclists sometimes make and most people don't know what it means, and they also don't know that motorists also have to do it if their turn signals malfunction.

Fun fact, in the UK bicycle brakes are actually the other way around, so left is rear wheel and right is front wheel. Blew my mind

It's different in Denmark where that gesture means "I'm stopping or slowing down."

The initial hand signal is used in Denmark to show the cyclist is slowing down.

I like how you casually explain why right hand is no option for cars

Also because bike lanes are near the shoulder the bicycler using their left arm visually aligns better with drivers field of vision. Downward direction of the left arm indicates stopping

The real reason is from motorcycles, right hand is the throttle hand..your front brake is like 70% of your stopping power but it doesnt throw you into outer space🚀

That’s why in England and counties that drive on the left side of the road have reversed braking systems. The use their right arm to indicate.

As someone who's arms never recovered from going over the handlebars, I can confirm we go into orbit every time. Don't worry though, my face broke my fall.

In an emergency braking situation, the weight shifts to the front wheel. Therefore despite It being safer to use the rear brake, it is better to learn to use the front.

Those signals are very old car driver signals and only the Left arm was used because that's the one that was closest to the driver's door or window. arm upright was right turn and arm straight out was left. still used today on pre 1972 motorcycles that were not equipped with turn signals

I know I am 30+ days late to the conversation, but here is how I was taught on military bases growing up.
"On a bicycle your arms make an arrow. A straight arm points to were you are going. A bent arm is like fletching, you retreat from the direction of you bent arm.
I was taught to ride as far right as I could, using my left arm to signal in MOST cases. If stopped at a multi directional stop (two-way or four-way), make the full arrow.
