I get the sarcasm.
If you want to finish a game 1000 times faster dont build a engine from scratch.
I make my own game engine because I want to become a better programmer in general :)

There are a few exceptions to needing a custom game engine for a game.... but 99% of the time, your game isn't that game. In fact, just assume it's not.

Making stuff from scratch is more fun for me

A framework is a nice middle ground. Something like Pygame, or MonoGame. They handle some core things like rendering textures, input handling, and give you the some of the tools you need to implement stuff like collision detection.

However the inner workings of your game are left to you to code, which I like. I get to hone my problem solving skills. There are also libraries you can use for stuff like physics. If you don't want to make them yourself.

I guess it depends on what your goal is. Just want to make games? Use engine. Want to understand whats going on under the hood, and sharpen your programming skills on top of that? Framework might be the better option.

Engine from scratch is madlad status.

When making your own game engine you should also never use libraries. You should write everything by yourself. And if you want to make your game cross platform you should just start writing code from scratch again

It reminds me that Unity did announced a Runtime Fee on ALL games that build using Unity. If you don't know, basically they charged game developers a fee per number of games installed.

Big thing about making a custom engine is to not do it with your first project. Get a few years of experience under your belt first.

Tbf, Godot is open source, and already uses 3 of my engine's techstack, so I may just be able to modify it.

But will probably need my own. Might Ship Of Theseus this.

nice art for the video . and your advice is very real i lowkey stalked some of the poeple that said no i can make my own engine and spoilers most of them didnt finish the simple platforming game that wouldnt take even a week on a game engine . the elitist that think a real developper makes thier own game engine are the reason i got interested on the topic but im not willing to spend so much time making an engine i forget what the game i was even trying to make is :) ( yes i looked up the names of the poeple who commented "i made my own engine " etc and they havent made shit ) :)

Cringe post. Never settle for unoptimized bloatware voodoo features that are overcomplicated yet somehow also dysfunctional at the same time.

Do not let the plebians who are too afraid to shut up and code scare you from the customization and optimization that you know your masterwork truly deserves!

You say that man but I swear to god I’m starting to go full blown conspiracy theorist after the pricing changes unity tried to pull a while back lmao. Also apparently I heard something about adobe trying to say they own the stuff you make with their apps but that could very well just be rumors. (Love your content btw)

Seemed like sarcasm, but can the makers of a game engine just take your game?
If so, is there something you can do?

Animal Well did this with success after 7 years of development, but I wouldn't try to do that yourself.

Idea for creating game from scratch quickly or at least I assume this would be quick.

First download enderal for Skyrim
Then change around 50% of the map to the same style of landscape and shape and so on as the Highlands and or the jungle or both ideally.

Next delete everything in Skyrim everything physical that is except for the floor / ground including buildings entryways caves and so on or rather you could expand and improve all the caves in Skyrim change the map markers and names and HUD style overall.

Add a miniature version of the Tower from the first season of sword art online this will be nowhere near copyrightable on the count of Sao does not have the rights to that Tower or any and all towers of the same look and make just make sure not to make all the monsters look the same or you really will be screwed.

Make larger villages in Skyrim but smaller than Sao most people don't appreciate getting lost inside of a 10/10 mile maze like the swiftly dying world of Warcraft.

Next create european-style dragons aka the type with four legs and two wings for a little extra creativity and flair, dinosaurs, large packs of wolves namely ranging between packs of 6 to 22 depending on your level, or other exciting creatures such as Avatar inspired ones such as monkey-fruit-bats as an example.

Then something I personally would do is add a necklace that you get as a reward for the assassin guild or whatever version of the dark brotherhood you decide to make I would make a necklace that gives you the ability to defend any way different from blocking but again you have to be a part of the assassin guild to wear it and use

Just a concept I came up with off the top of my head while typing.
