This weeks RAW edit brings us this well composed and exposed portrait that just has one issue which is unfortunate.

How would you correct the problem in this photo, try your hand at editing the RAW file.

I don't really like any of the edits this week, but if I had to pick one, I would pick Jared's color edit.

And I think you should keep posting the NEF or post both, because with the NEF file we can see where the focus point was.

Turns out he was shooting in manual focus because the tamron lens he was using does not focus very well.

Great tutorial and shooting techniques for shooting a portrait. The first part/shooting is the most crucial and editting can't save everything. Thanks for all of the reminders and the new info. I love the discussions. Keep up the great work.

@markusBARTOSCH i happen to have a film 50mm 1.4 that i use, so no auto focus. i usually switch to live view, because the dslr penta prism mirrors are not very good at showing DOF. also, there is most likely a button (for me its the info button) that if i'm in live view, it will use digital zoom to zoom in and you can really get it spot on for focus.

Hey Jared, is it possible that one of you both having problems with your settings. Gregs image had been very flat when he started to edit this photo?
Love to see your videos! Congratulation!!

Some tips for better focus: Don't focus manually unless you absolutely have to. Control your autofocus points. Take more than one shot of the subject, forcing the camera to refocus every time (a way to err on the side of caution). Remember that if you don't have a focal point in your viewfinder close enough to what you want to focus on, you can always use the closest one to lock in the focus, recompose it, then take the shot. Make sure you and your subject keep as still as possible.

Hi JaredPolin, I have a focus issue with my Nikkor 18-200mm AF-S ED-DX I tried many way but SOMETIME i don't get sharp focus in my portrait pictures. I even use one spot and focus on a eyes, but sharp area is not on the eye (same problem when i AF/M focus). What should when I am shooting for portrait picture? Thank you in advance. Cheers.

Jared, when comparing the photos, hide the right panel and dim the lights ! will make them pop more.

I would love to access some of these older RAW files, but they do not seem to be available still. Any way we can still get them?

I know this sounds dumb but how do you get the photo information in the top left corner on Lightroom?

what software is used to edit the raw pictures?

By the way, Jared and Greg, have you considered that your monitors may not be calibrated the same, making your edits look different depending on which monitor they're displayed on?

Hmm... Look at one of the last frames of Greg's part editing the photo. Then look at Greg's edit in the final lineup. Don't they seem completely different in color? Is there a color problem in recording the separate videos or am I imagining things? Calibration perhaps? Anyway, cool series guys.

I like the third picture best, I like the yellows and how the white in the rock isn't blown out.

why do you make b/w with decreasing saturation/vibrance to 0 ? and not with the black & white button??? thanks

I couldn't agree more! Very unfortunate that the subject face was outta focus. My advice would be: Take time to compose and take several shots and then evaluate the best one.
