Details about the Asiana flight 214 crash are emerging as survivors are coming forward to tell their stories.
One passenger said before the crash, the aircraft was so close to the bay that water sprayed up onto the windows. Cabin manager Lee Yoon-hye later told reporters that two inflatable slides malfunctioned as people tried to escape. During evacuation, two slides inflated inside the cabin instead of outside, trapping two flight attendants. The cabin manager stated that crew members used axes to free their colleagues. One flight attendant was also seen putting a young boy on her back before escaping down a properly inflated slide.
First responders arrived within minutes, at which time the plane had already begun to go up in flames.
Authorities are also investigating the possibility that one of the two victims who died in the crash may have been hit by a rescue vehicle. The two victims were 16-year-old Ye Mengyuan and 17-year-old Wang Linjia, both from China. However, no further details have been released as the investigation is ongoing. The two girls' Jiangshan Middle School classmates have held a candlelight vigil in their honor.
Meanwhile, president and CEO of Asiana Airways, Yoon Young-doo, says the pilot at the controls was in training aboard the Boeing 777, but that all responsibilities lie with the instructor captain.
