Wesko - Helene [The Carolina Taping] (Official Lyric Video)

Показать описание

'Helene’ is a song for the mountains, for all the Western North Carolinians and all the Appalachian people that are struggling to pick up the pieces after the storm. For the community wrestling with the loss of property, homes, and unfortunately in many cases, family members. This song comes from a heavy heart after seeing all that devastation happen, not on a TV screen in a place a thousand miles away, but to my statesmen in the most beautiful place on Earth. Coming from a native Eastern North Carolinian and to all those struggling; I’m praying for all of you. We’ll be donating 50% of all the proceeds of ‘Helene’ to the North Carolina Community Foundation Disaster Relief Fund. Stay strong and keep the faith, we’ve got your back.”

Lyrics:

There’s violence down on market street
But we didn’t know violence till we met Helene

When the good folks are drowning in their mountain homes
You’ll have to take a vacation just to bury their bones

It’s sunshine and roses on the TV screen
those talking heads ain’t seen what I seen

I’ve seen a mother standing on top of her house
A baby in her arms as they floated on down
I watched my brother hanging on that limb
Like a crucified Peter with a will to live

The smell of death lingers on that mountainside
Ain’t nothing left but the tears I’ve yet to cry

You can’t call for help when the lines are down
The roads are washed out headed back to town
We’ll sit here waiting on the coming of the lord
Or till we run out of water and we meet him for sure

That hurricane took us by surprise
But When it rains that rivers bound to rise

Mountain Folk immortalize tragedy in music. This song will go down in history as a testament to what happened. And as long as this song exists, those lost will never be forgotten.

"...or till we run out of water and we meet him for sure" gets me every time. I've been listening to and singing this song for 2 weeks and I don't think I've gotten through it a single time without tearing up. So real and so beautiful. This region needed this, especially those poor people up in them hills. You have an AMAZING voice and you deserve to make it. I really hope this song gets you your big break. From one Carolina boy to another, thank you. Uupstate South Carolina will NEVER forget or abandon our brothers and sisters in them hills.

Beautiful and yet heart wrenching. I wish there was a last verse talking about the incredible faith, love, and resilience of the mountain people and those who have sacrificed so much to help them.

I went through Helene with my 2 kids here in Western NC. This song brings me to tears. There's been so much devastation, and so many families are hurting. God bless the churches and community members who have been helping so many. Prayers for those who lost loved ones. #wncstrong

I'm on the TN side that boarders the NC mountains that was effected. So was our county. Bridges washed out, it now takes 40 mins to get to town VS 10/15 mins before. My daddy is 78 says he's never seen anything like it. Us mountain folks will survive. Thank you for writing a song we can all relate to. ❤

I got here on day 2 & didn’t leave for 10 days. I can’t stop working for the communities up here. “Eventually I’m going to need rescuing myself” is the ongoing joke. If you see this in person, it will change you for life. Please come Volunteer and bring lots of hope.

I've been in the Telcom industry for 18 years and worked several hurricanes. Nothing could have prepared me for that one. Working all over the Asheville area, I can't imagine what you folks went through. My heart goes out to you, gracious people.

I heard this song for the first time performed at the Concert for Carolina last night. I live in Fairview, NC, one of the tiny mountain towns decimated by Hurricane Helene. This song captures the horrific loss and sorrow so beautifully well - so many of us are at a complete loss for words trying to describe the magnitude of devastation and impact to our communities. Fantastic soul wrenching performance at Concert for Carolinas; I cried through the whole thing and still cry every time I hear it.

I've lived here in Weaverville NC for 24 years. I've never seen anything like this when I lived in Florida, through multiple hurricanes. This is so devastating you almost feel guilty for trying to get back to some sense of "normal". Always remembering there will be no "normal" for the good neighbors that lost their family members and homes. I want to thank you for this song, I think alot of people just need a release. We're all in shock this was suppose to be a tropical storm not a full blown hurricane. I also want to thank all the linemen who came to help along with all the other volunteers and donations lord knows we need it. The infrastructure will come but the loss will never leave. The scariest thing is NO COMMUNICATION! We had no service to see how our family was. As I sit here with no power temporarily as 3wks later they are still doing work on the lines I will not complain. I am safe I still have a roof over my head and a job. My heart goes out to all my neighbors who have lost everything may God be with you.

This song moved me. We live in Upstate SC, about 45 minutes below these hard hit areas. We thought we were hit hard, until we saw what happened in NC. We now feel blessed with only 51 deaths here. If it were not for social media, many Americans would have no idea of the devastation there, and I am so glad he added those lines "It's sunshine and roses on that TV screen, those talking heads they ain't seen what I've seen." Death counts are much higher than they are saying, and our Federal Government and its "agencies" are not doing enough for these hardworking tax paying AMERICAN CITIZENS. Keep praying and donating, its cold in the mountains and many people are living in tents.

Thank you so much for the full version. Such a hauntingly beautiful song...one that mountain folk will use ...for generations to come..to tell the story of this event. Hoping it is released to streaming services soon.

“You can’t call for help when the lines are down, and the roads are washed out headed back to town.”

It’s that momentary feeling of helplessness that you have to put aside to keep doing what’s needed for those around you. It’s looking for gas, sharing food, checking on your neighbor, finding and purifying water. All while feeling helpless and uncertain, because what is true today might not, probably will not, be true tomorrow.

I’ve been gone for two weeks now and want to go back home already. My car is still being fixed from the flood water and my water situation is still tbd.

Raw and poignant. I imagine this song helps in ways I can’t even fathom. I pray this song has great success and the proceeds from it help many. May God bless and comfort all those affected. 🙏Sending Light & LoVe from Michigan.💫
