From my experience Picked hoplites are usually best when playing athens. Army gets rather small but you can use the hammer (lancers) on the very good anvil (picked hoplites)

I always play Athens and my late army got 8 hoplites 6 Archers and 4 small ballistas

If you're pairing them with another faction might I suggest tylis or suebi as other good options, suebi I would say is preferable as it provides much more offensive infantry capabilities and it has archers of their own. Plus spear wall are great.

The reason I'm responding to so much of your stuff is because I think you're doing a great job, I have my own small insights I feel are valuable to include in the conversation as someone who has been playing the game for a while as well. Due to the fact that I am not limited by time, I'm able to provide some fairly in-depth explanations and add to what you've already said.

Anymore the game is best when played with friends and I encourage to just do stuff you think is fun but do it well. It's part of why I love all your videos that I've spotted because you're teaching people the fundamentals of how the game works

Just get as close as you can to 50% Pikemen and 50% Cavalry, bad in sieges but it will destroy any field army.

Man i totally didn't follow this lol i decided to do a rip off of Alexanders army lots of hoplites and four units of sword fighters kinda like the sheildbearers ill let you know how my first custom battle goes lol

Again I can see hellenic faction without pikes. And in all your videos I've watched you always give barbarian factions as "pairing" factions. You definately prefer sword units and generally barbarian melee spam, but it doesn't work for every faction. Don't tell people how to play other factions if you really prioritize one type of playing.

Don't play Rome 2, it'll let you down. Play og Rome and if you have to, play remastered. Rome 2 is trash, just like Atilla and thrones of britannia
