Kamala Harris set to announce VP running mate today

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to announce her VP running mate today as she begins a tour of battleground states with her pick. Harris will be in Philadelphia on Tuesday for a rally at 5:30 p.m. Who she takes the stage with remains unknown, as of Tuesday morning.

Harris is expected to unveil her choice for vice president with a video announcement, likely before the event. Her rally comes one day after she officially became the party's nominee following days of virtual voting by delegates.

Three contenders have emerged as her likely running mate: Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota.

The battleground tour is also expected to include stops in Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada. Among the seven states Harris and her soon-to-be-named running mate will visit, six were narrowly won by President Joe Biden in 2020.

If she picks Josh Shapiro over Tim Walz, that choice would define VP Harris' as staid politics of the usual and lacking guts. The choice of Shapiro is the obvious; the choice of Walz is brave and enigmatic. She ought to take the road less traveled.
