Lentil Dandelion Soup - Depression Era Recipe - Cheap Budget Meal

preview_player
Показать описание
During the Great Depression many people grew their own food and foraged for wild edibles like dandelion greens. When I was growing up, my uncle used to stop the car if he saw a field of dandelions and get out and harvest the greens. It is still possible to forage for them but you want to make sure that they are not close to roads and haven't been sprayed with chemicals and pesticides. You can also buy them in many stores and supermarkets. People ate them because they were free. This is a very cheap meal to make. A big pot of soup can be made for about a dollar. It is also very healthy.

I enjoy your channel. This reminds me of the turnip green soup eaten here in the South. My husband and I like it, so I'm sure we'd love this, as well. Thank you for sharing, Grandma Feral. Blessings to you and your husband!

Lol. I love when you ask Grandpa Feral if it tastes good and he says yes. This does look yummy especially with the polenta dumplings and some garlic with the Italian seasoning.

Now this is a dish I see myself trying in the near future, even if Eric isn't on board with the dandelion greens; might it work as well with, say, escarole? Once again, thank you, dear Grandma Feral, for sharing a delightful-looking recipe -- and evoking a memory of my mother rejecting polenta as an adult: her family had been given it as part of Home Relief during the Great Depression so frequently that the very sight of it eventually sickened her, even into adulthood.

Cool recipe. I'd have to add bouillon though...I'm a bouillon nut. lol Loving your inexpensive recipes! Cooking with food bank supplies, this is more helpful than you know! Will have to see if they have Italian seasoning at the dollar store.

I'll have to try this seasoning in oatmeal faux sausage! Oatmeal and eggs & seasoning, then flooded with bouillon and cooked until it soaks up a lot of bouillon. Then fried to crisp it up. Don't make them too thick of patties though or the bouillon doesn't get all the way through. Tastes like sausage patty and the consistency of it too!

🥗 I love dandelions, and I eat them in salads, in sandwiches, and also sautéed with onions and garlic, wonderful food.🧄🧅

What a good idea to use the polenta this way! Dandelions are so versatile, this is really a nice way to brighten up a lentil soup. I like your addition of the acidity of lemon juice, which I suppose could be exchanged for a little wine vinegar or even balsamic if there's no lemon in the house.

Hurrah for your uncle - I brake for wild food, too. It's sad that so many of our farmers' fields are treated with who knows what.

That soup sounds good Mr Feral. In some country's if you don't slurp your soup it's taken as a insult. Just a bet of free information. Thanks for sharing. All the college kids in my Granddaughters dorm are happy Elizabeth is cooking them depression meals. They told me it bets top Ramon every night.

I normally don’t care for lentils, but this looks good! I don’t know what dandelion greens taste like, but maybe other greens could be substituted.
