It wasn't just crazy back then. Up until 1987-1988 they operated on babies without any painkillers, sedatives etc bc they thought babies couldn't feel pain.

THE CORSET THING IS A MYTH. Not only were they created to support the back and bust, but they were also necessary to support the weight of the clothing worn on top. Corsets are in fact extraordinarily comfortable (when molded properly to the wearer) and women are fully able to do regular activities in corsets (there were even sporting corsets made that women could use for any physical activity). The illusion of small waists was achieved in the 1860’s via wide skirts, long pointed bodices, and wide necklines. Through the decades, the silhouette shifted from wide all around to more volume in the back, though the illusion of a small waist was maintained via the outward clothing and supplemented with bust and bottom padding. Corsets specifically for pregnant women were also made (they would adjust to the size of the stomach) and reportedly they actually were extremely helpful in taking a lot of the weight of the stomach.
Additionally, this myth was spread by male cartoonists in the late 19th century to mock the fashion styles of the time. Corsetry was an almost entirely female-driven industry, and men had little to no part in it. Now tell me why women would subject themselves to over 200 years of stays (the precursor to the corset) and corsets purely for the male gaze?

Corsets don't shift your organs or break your bones. The only reason that they would be that tight or hurt was if you got the wrong sized corset or just wanted it smaller. They have padding under the corsets so they can actually feel comfortable. Pretty common misconception.

The corset thing is a myth. Corsets can actually be pretty comfortable and have good support if they’re made properly. The small waist look was achieved with all the layers of clothing put on top. Wide skirts, etc.
