Star Citizen: The Toxic Community Mine Field That Threatens It’s Future | Star Citizen Controversy

When Star Citizen beginners first arrive in the 'verse, they are in for many great experiences in gameplay, gorgeous sights of orbital stations, cityscapes, landscapes, ship designs, combat, and so much more. But there is another aspect of Star Citizen that a player will actively struggle to avoid, and that is being drawn into the war between the White Knights of CIG, and the Dark Knight malcontents of reddit, and other platforms.

I personally enjoy the game, and want to give my take on one of the biggest threats to the long term success of the project, which in my view is community mismanagement which starts at the top. I hope you enjoy my first video in this style of commentary.

This being my first video in this style, its a little rough around the edges. I learn best from feedback from you guys, so don't hold back. I have thick skin, thick skull, and have girth in general so I can take it. There were alot of things I kept wanting to add, but I saw the balloon effect happening so I had to cut it and just release the thing. That being said, I hope you enjoy the video, love you guys.

I left an ORG I got invited to by a friend of a friend. I didnt like it there (nor the person who invited me) very much. When I left, said person went on a rage spree. And made the entire org shittalk me, making up lies, like claiming I was "poaching members" just because my friend, who followed me to the org. Was there only to play with me, then they kicked said friend out before he even knew I left. Which is when they claimed I was "poaching" like wtf? How is that poaching? And I was given threats and I was told their org with 50-100 members had me on their blacklist/kill on sight list. And that they where planning to tell every other "50+" orgs they where connected to that I was a person that should be killed on sight even tho I litterally did nothing. Litterally planning or wanting to make me fear playing the game. It almost made me refund, but at least I know it is time consuming to hunt people down. If they want to hunt me down their timewasting xxD.

Some of the people who not only support this game, but pour all their money and time into it. Has a childish obsession with this half baked mess of a game. I love what I have seen after trying. But the community, while it can be nice. My biggest mistake was joining an org of strangers. If you decide you rather want to play for yourself with friends they will spit on you and call you out for simply wanting to play with your friends... And joining any big groups in this game can put a target on your back for targetted harassment. I hate the fact I am not even alone about this. It seems my guesses about the SC community was right from the start.

Part of advice to new players. Stick to playing with your friends exclusively. Orgs arent safe. You will be tired to stupid rules they make up and go on hate brigades if you figure out it is not for you even if they claim there is "no ties". I am not playing games for this shit...

Yep. I posted in spectrum that hover mode was flawed but a good start. Got abused by them vocal few who wanted it gone.

Needless to say, CIG got rid of it and never seen anything like it since. And, I haven't played since.

Toxic community puts me off 110%

Hey Mike, I'm liking the new format! Never be afraid to try new stuff and find your voice. As a fellow OIF Vet, I enjoy hearing other people's deployment stories. Not sure if people that haven't been there "get" it, but it was a high point in the video for me, at least. As someone that kickstarted SC in 2012 based largely on Roberts' dream (and track record of making games that I loved) it's a slippery slope towards White Knight-dom. I'd LIKE to defend the dream, but I gotta remind myself to stick to reality above all else. It's important to remember that this game MAY YET crash and burn, and if it does, there's a good chance it'll be because Roberts is a micromanaging, abrasive, narcissist prone to bouts of nepotism. He's not a saint or even a great guy. That being said, I like where SC is going so far, and hope that someday we will see the full game. See you in the 'verse. o7

Mandalore said the same thing about the Star Citizen community in his video from 6 or 7 years ago.
I guess not much has changed since then in the Star Citizen universe. The community is as stuck as the development :D

I'm glad someone finally explained a lot of this. I think you might be the first to fully explain this. I never understood this completely until now.

I would love to see a updated video due to all the events that occurred during 3.18. They games morale has hit an all time low.

You forgot to mention the opposite of the white knight. The kind of person who accuses you of being a white knight if you say anything positive about the project…

That interrogation scene, ive never seen anything like that on YT lmao. It was, good. Anyways, there was alot of good info in here, you make a good case for the "cult of Roberts" in that I get why people can develop blind faith in the game. I don't personally get on board with that but I think that was the point, showing how someone else COULD.

This was fun to watch, and the first I have ever seen about the topic. Good job!
I have no objections to someone making an opinion about their experience, good or bad. I just have a real problem when someone states information as fact.
The most common I see is, it takes a beast NASA computer to run this game. So they trash the game saying it sucks because they have poor performance.
There is a lot of false info out there and opinions based on it. A lack of info is a problem as well.
I have been accused of being a white night when I attempt to correct that info.
So there is a grey area to be known in this topic as well.
I have seen the roles in the interrogation get reversed with the folks of negative input.

I absolutely LOVED freelancer. It was AWESOME (considering I only got into it around 2007).

First time I ever watched you. Subscribed right after video was over. Thank you for your insight. I'm a mid old backer 2016. Policing white nights is a good idea. I would not like the public to get a biased view of the game.

This was great, man. I think the bit with Microsoft was my favorite part, and I'm sure that is exactly how it went. Including the "You suck" at the end 😂

The problem is SC makes more money being in development than if it released and had to sell copies the regular way

I’ve played a lot of simulations, and this is one of the hottest burning dumpster fires of the community I’ve ever interacted with.

The biggest thing that broke the camels back was over this past end of the year event (XenoThreat). Disconnects and the account corruption issues that were the result of all that. 10 Years and millions of dollars and they styhave weak servers and code. I did white knight-ish the game back in the day. But the realization that they announce and focus on the shinny new thing they are pushing is more important than the basics. The basic structure of the game is awful. When ever there is a big event there are major server issues. I'm in this game for about around $120. Not much considering some people. Most of anger comes from that the basics and focus on their new (new ships, fluffy clouds, grease spots on the floor) shinny thing/idea takes top priority.

Reddit is a free for all. They say alot
..and that's it. I was a frequent person in the chat on SC. Made many friends (and we disagreed many times, and solved them in a civilized manner in the end) and some enemies. I even had respectful discourse with MODs in the Chat. I preferred the chat than posting in the forums. If you go in the chat spewing shit...you will get shit 2 fold back.
