WRAL meteorologists are tracking Potential Tropical Cyclone #9 in the western Caribbean and its potential to impact North Carolina.

The system currently designated as PTC #9 is expected to strengthen into Hurricane Helene, with forecasts indicating it could reach Category 3 status by the time it makes landfall in Florida on Thursday.

The storm could form in the Gulf and make landfall in Florida by Thursday before turning left and heading up through the Midwest, according to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. Impacts to central and western N.C. would be mainly rain by the weekend.

At 11 a.m. on Monday, we got a first look at the system's projected path, which shows impact to central and western N.C. later this week.
