When I was a kid, I loved monster movies. Some of my favorites featured Beverly Garland, and I developed a preteen crush on her. At age ten or eleven, I wrote her a letter, C/O Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn, telling her I thought she was the prettiest girl in the world. She responded straight away, sending me a lovely hand-penned letter, and several signed glossy photos. A genuinely classy lady, and by all accounts, a warm and gracious presence in Hollywood.

OH, WOW!! I used to work at the Beverly Garland Hotel back in 1993. I worked in the kitchen at the restaurant they had inside.

A couple years ago my wife and I stayed at the Garland while visiting LA. It was beautiful and the the people who work there are super friendly. We loved our stay and will book it again for our next trip.

I had close friends that worked at Hollywood Bail Bonds, but I was never there. I use to get my mail at 8033 Sunset Blvd, (Scott Thorson, Liberace's ex worked at the mail service) and I saw the commotion going on at the Chateau Marmont and learned later from the news that John Belushi had died. I use to grab a sandwich and potato salad to go from Greenblatt's. Beverly Garland was a very sweet lady. Beverly and her husband bought the 7 acres from Gene Autry and built the hotel on it. The autograph shows were great, photos were $5-$10 and no charge to take a photo and everyone was very friendly. Beverly's son James and his partner now run the hotel, and the prices have gone up a lot, plus they now get over $20 a night to park.

Elvis's Hillcrest home, those gates were put up right after the Manson murders. He told the fans, that if they promised to not congregate at night due to the murders...he would promise to come out every day to see them and sign autographs.

These Matchbook match up's are so much fun to watch. I think it's cool you collect matchbooks from old Hollywood. I am so bummed they are gonna tear down The Viper Room.

Great video Scott, another trip down memory lane. It got me thinking of how much the whole culture has changed and how today's Hollywood can't hold a candle to the early years, good thing we have you to take us back. Thanks Scott!

It made me sad to see a restaurant close down after 95 years, but what an amazing run! So much history must have happened at all these amazing places. Thank you for showing us!

Slapsie Maxie fought in 298 fights
He had 223 wins 44 losses and
29 draws. Unheard of today. Most boxers
today might do 50 fights before retiring.
He also fought in, Middle, Light Heavy
And Heavy weight matches.
So glad you mentioned him.

Thanks, Scott. I love the old places. If only Hollywood was still the magic place it used to be. When is the next podcast? Be watching for it.

Great video. I’m pretty sure that exterior of Hollywood Bail bonds and the PD building we’re in the show “Bosch” a few times, particularly an episode showing a street protest in front of the bail bonds storefront. Great job as usual!

9:57 Maxie was "big Louie" the gangster in 'The Munsters' episode where Herman is mistaken for Maxie's character. When I visited the Stoogeum I saw lots of posters of Shemp's movies (minus Moe & Larry). They were in a hall which a friend described as "The Hall of Shemp", lol. Maxie was often a co-star of Shemp's and was featured prominently in those posters.
