But Rudy. Because of our higher labor costs, our products are intrinsically more expensive. Lower taxes were a factor, but high labor cost is the main reason industry moved overseas in the first place. So getting other countries to lower their tariffs will do little to stimulate our exports, except perhaps in luxury items. Increasing tariffs on imports will narrow the gap between the cost of foreign goods versus US manufactured goods. But prices in the US will go up substantially. Stuff will simply cost a big chunk more.
The Economist recently estimated that the cost of consumer goods will rise 25% for the rich and 40% or more for the middle class. For the poor, who can only afford the cheapest goods, prices will likely rise around 63%. That's a problem! Your voters are not going to be happy about that.
