As US president Obama prepares for his annual State of the Union speech on 28 January, income inequality is expected to be on the top of his agenda.

The US has one of the highest income gaps in the developed world, and the gap is growing.

The BBC's David Botti breaks down the numbers to see how the US compares to the rest of the world and how Americans are reacting to the income gap.

It means fixing things myself instead of hiring someone else.  It means not keeping up with the Joneses.  It means we should look into the UK basic income idea.

Do you know how much good food gets thrown away daily in the u.s.? For every bag of apples, if one is bad or has a big scratch on it the WHOLE thing is tossed! The same with bread, boxes, cans, you name it! There is no reason not to feed the poor! Some stated even forbid it! Do you know how many new clothes could be donated? How many homes built for the homeless? How many people without jobs could be growing food and helping each other and their community? The options are there. But who wants to

There's always be income inequality & always will be. Why should a cardiologist who worked hard & went to med school for 10-12 years be vilified as "greedy" because they make $500, 000.-$1 million a year? The fact is there are a lot of poor people who don't have the skill and motivation to work hard and become successful. Take someone who drops out of high school & has no training or vocational skill. That person will most likely be working at a Tom Thumb or McDonalds even when they're 40,  & they'll still be wondering why they have no money because those jobs are all they are qualified for. I'm not rich, but I am middle class. 20 years ago, I worked at a Publix full time & put myself through college to get my bachelor's degree. We all know a college degree won't guarantee you a six figure salary, but is required to become qualified for most high paying jobs. Obviously no one wants to be poor, the same way no one wants to be fat. But there are a lot of people who lack the motivation & determination to lose weight.

I am far from rich... I make enough to live and no more...I work for the nothing that I have and don't look down on people because they have a better life than me!!! I quit school and went to work...I am in construction, It is MY fault I am in the situation I am in...I don't sit around crying cause my neighbor has 3 cars, a boat, jetski and motorbikes...he worked hard and knew how to manage his money...why should he have to give you some of his money just because he makes more? anyone who wants more than they have earned is very selfish!!!
