The main benefit of formal schooling is to know what it is you can look up. Like, I have degrees in computer programming. What I learned was a huge number of problems that have already been solved, and why. Then I work with people who were self-taught, and they try to reinvent the wheel because they don't know the wheel has already been invented. Many, many, many times I've seen someone struggling with a problem that could have been solved by knowing what to google.

This makes me think of chemistry classes. They expect you to memorize the elements, but the entire reason the periodic table was invented was so that you wouldn't need to memorize that info

like imagine telling a professional historian to write an essay on a specific subject, but they're only allowed to memorise the material beforehand and then time themselves writing the actual paper. or telling a literary scholar to memorise a dozen quotes from a book and then write an anaylsis of it. it's ridiculous.

Also, teachers absolutely despise when anybody points this obvious truth out to them or to others in front of them.

School: A handful of very hard questions, even if you get half of them wrong you still kinda pass
Real Life: A whole lot of rather easy questions and you get 3 extra pages of questions for every single one you get wrong

my sister was allowed to use everything on her own laptop for her programming exam but internet was turned off (to prevent people from sending messages to eachother) so everyone just downloaded the entire documentation of java and c++

You know who uses like those and sometimes hundreds of other books for reference? Actual writers.

Tests and exams went from being something to gauge how well you knew a certain topic to becoming boss battles that you're expected to defeat even if there's no actual benefit.

i'm in grad school and my professors always have open book exams, because if you have access to materials and can find the answer, that's just as good as knowing the answer

The thing all of these have in common is, they aren't testing memory. School should be about problem solving, not memory, so it shouldn't matter how much information you're given.

Google helps, but in many professions it does take experience and education to even know what to look for, not to mention filtering the wrong/incomplete information from the correct stuff
