Prisoners and most ex-felons can't vote, but prisoners and ex-felons can be president. I'm not joking.

For anyone wondering, he was in prison for not complying with the WW1 draft

I told a few of my high school teachers about Eugene Debs’ presidential run behind bars. They couldn’t believe it.

This sort of happened in the UK as well.

An Irish republican named Bobby Sands was on hunger strike in the maze prison in Northern Ireland, and ran for MP. With basically the entire Catholic community behind him, he got the seat. New law got made after Sands died of starvation.

Representative Nathaniel Lyon (the guy who dueled fellow Representative Roger Griswold on the House floor) was elected from prison in 1798 after being imprisoned for violating the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Truth is, if the law worked as intended, most politicians would be in prison.

Thank for clearing that up Mr. Beat. A lot of misinformation surrounding this on the internet.

If the president was elected while in a federal prison he/she would have an excellent opportunity to test the constitutionality of the self-pardon

Wasn’t he also the guy that led the Pullman’s railroad strike? (Sorry, I had an APUSH test today)

Bro Eugene Debs was a goat. He led one of the biggest unions of his day, fought for the rights of workers, fought for equal rights and an end to child labor, and famously did an anti-ww1 speech, knowing he’d proably get arrested for it under the sedition act (which he was)

He’s honestly one of the greatest and most underrated US politicians oat 🐐

No America, what are you doing? Not all prisoners can vote, and even after their release some states they can't easily get their voting right back, but being prison is okay for being president.

His jailers could prevent him from campaigning. If it's a state prison, they could refuse to release him even if he's elected. Also, I think individual states might be able to exclude him and forbid electors from voting for him.

Eugene Debs was a founding member of the IWW and led and was part of several very pivotal strikes. Truly a great man, and if you sell your life to survive ("working class") this man should be one of your heroes

I actually sort of understand this. Banning prisoners from being allowed to become a president would allow room for a whole lot of corruption. Don’t want your political rival to become president? Jail him! Now he never can become president. This could allow for a lot of dirty play and improper control of who should be president.

The title of prisoner should be deterrent in itself, that way the innocent who have been framed still have a chance. It could go very wrong if we changed this I feel.

Edit: fixed spelling
