If my pc freezes to the pint I can’t use the restart button, it’s too frozen to ctrl-alt-del

Good thing I have a physical restart button right below my power button.

This is assuming your pc is responsive to get to that option.

You can also hold the power button down for 8 seconds to force a shutdown. Flipping the switch on your PC’s power supply off and back on or unplugging it will do the trick too.

I remember back in the ye olde days when ctrl+alt+delete was *the* definite no-return forced to restart with no questions asked whatsoever.

Hold down power for a few seconds. Your computer will immediately turn black, followed by a small pop/crack sound. This is called a “hard reset”, and what we’ve all been using instead of this, since CTRL Alt Del isn’t always gonna work, Microsoft!

This actually goes way back to the NT3.1 days and has been on every major release since then (aside 95 and 98 if memory serves, it was on NT4.0 tho). Although, as many have pointed out, if the PC is fully frozen and not even a BSOD is willing to pop up, the easiest way is to press the reset switch, switch off the power supply, or hold the power button for a while until it fully shuts down.

When the worst case scenario comes I'll use the physical reset button.

If it freezes that bad I don't even think I'm able to get to that menu.

If your PC is frozen and it's not doing anything the *LAST* resort is unpluging your PC...

Heres the problem with that. Most of the time a freeze isn't going to be that bad. If it is bad enough that you can't physically press the power button to start a shutdown/restart, then it's probably so frozen it won't even respond to Ctrl+Alt+Del and this isn't even an available option. Thirdly, if it is not so bad that you can Ctrl+Alt+Del, you will likely be able to open the task manager and close things until it works, or, because you have CTRL+ALT+DEL open already, the power options would be available already.

Unless this is some kind of extreme niche freeze where for some reason you can get into that menu but for some reason can't use the power options, then sure I guess? But that is the most niche problem to ever encounter I think

I feel so bad for the people who accidentally did this 😞

Ay this is actually a very cool fact that I never knew after using a PC my whole life. Thanks.

the hidden menu he is talking about is super useful when messing with drivers

ctrl-alt-del is so good when I'm playing dodgy/outdated games that may freeze my PC. Absolute lifesaver!

Mylast resort is to disconnect the battery from the back of my laptop 💀

I prefer the reset button, if that doesn't work for some reason, I just hit the switch on my surge protector. Thing's 11 years old, it doesn't matter what happens to it.

At that point I would just unplug it and plug it back in

My pc usually gets fucked up so badly this doesn't work anyway and the only way to restart it is to hold the power button
