I think headlights are subjective. The problem with LEDs have way too much glare. It’s always a trade off. It’s the physics. The brighter the light, the more you can see, but then the more glare for oncoming traffic. LEDs are great for the driver of the vehicle but it poses safety concerns for oncoming traffic, especially in wet conditions.

Kase said it. Bigger is NOT safer. Just because you’re driving a monster truck doesn’t mean you’ll survive a crash with a regular car.

Mazda always impresses just by virtue of how much smaller it is compared to the huge companies.

Great points on the HUGE gaps in truck safety. The same is true for truck based SUVs like the Suburban and Expedition.

🤣 Still waiting on IIHS to do full crash testing on Jeep Gladiator. I mean it's been 4 years. Only crash test for it was full frontal NHTSA. A kid's tricycle could pass that.

I find it interesting how these ratings can trick people into thinking that some cars are "unsafe". Like how a car that was rated "TSP or TSP+" last year is not this year... its the same car, the rating/standards just changed. I think its safe to say that most modern cars are pretty safe.

I live near IIHS and have seen one of their test in person. Very cool (& loud) experience!!!

Poor headlights are a pet peeve of mine. It isn't rocket science, I can't understand why ALL manufacturers don't have better lighting systems. We had two Volvo Cross Country wagons years ago, a 1999 and a 2001 that had spectacular headlights, both low and high beams, the best I've seen in my 55 years of driving. Of course, historically, ironically enough, one of the stumbling blocks to better lighting has been NHTSA, which while claiming to be all about safety, was in fact a supporter of woefully antiquated U.S. lighting tech which kept better systems out of American's hands! What do they make us have instead? The idiotic "stop-start" feature!

Guys, 2024 is probably coming soon.
Please include clips or pictures of the vehicle you’re talking about or mentioning.
Crash clips would be even better as you speak about it.

Kind of ironic that the vehicles that would cause the most damage in a crash are conveniently unrated and becoming more and more popular

Why no rear end crash test, think about it, very hard to get out of third row if your hit in the rear, that is if you could survive in the third row

Thanks for covering this topic. The IIHS keeps raising the bar each year, requiring more and better safety equipment. Now the vehicles must have pedestrian detection and avoidance plus the other items you mentioned. And they have pioneered the headlight capability tests in recent years, which is a very very good thing. Regarding the Civic Type R, did it not make the grade due to poor crash results, or because Honda didn't want to give them a $50k sedan to crash?

Glad insurance company crash tests are rating headlights. It’s bothered me that halogens are standard on many trims even though prices say I should have LEDs.

They appear to have not tested the new Accord yet. I wonder if it will do well since it is a new design?

Talking about headlights I'm so glad 4runners moving to LEDs. Previous halogens are a big safety concern for me and why I changed to LED bulbs. Its interesting how good LED bulbs are a perfect upgrade as they give very good light pattern like the stock newer 4Runner LEDs.

I'm really hoping that Honda's new '23 Pilot will get tested and come away with the Top Safety Pick Plus rating. That or I guess I can stick with the MIDX, it's just that I want the extra size of the Pilot.

Can someone kindly explain to me that why did Mazda CX-30 4-door SUV get "2023 Top Safety Pick" instead of "+"? I found Cx-30 4-d suv matched all the required criteria for "+". Thanks in advance

The side impact test is faulted in its design, the vehicle being tested is not also moving. Most side impacts happen at intersections when both vehicles are moving

Automobiles these days are far to Large and Heavy, affecting Power and Fuel Economy. What about the danger from headlight glare for other drivers on the road? Also, what about the dangers and distractions of the Infotainment System / Touch Screen? What are the IIHS findings on the Infotainment System / Touch Screens? How is this any different then using a Cell Phone while driving?
