Knowing how to run a meeting, moderate a panel, or broker an important conversation can be critical for your professional and personal success. Rather than seeing these interactions as hurdles to overcome, there are strategies to make them smoother and more collaborative.

In his Essentials of Strategic Communication class, lecturer Matt Abrahams explains the five Ps of successful facilitation. In this short video, he offers tools you can use the next time you need to guide a crucial discussion. #classtakeaways #stanfordgsb

1. Plan for patterns (e.g. who is likely to say what and in what order)
2. Provide a clear purpose (Information - Emotion - Action)
3. Promise psychological safety (set ground rules early)
4. Provide positive presence (be visible, moving around, etc.)
5. Paraphrase ideas

However, there are also instances where it's best to repeat verbatim what others in the group have said.
1. It's possible to not state what the individual meant to say.
2. By using the exact words the individual feels heard.
3. It gives the individual an opportunity to clarify what they meant if it was not what they had intended to convey.

Thanks for sharing your experience, wisdom and expertise.🙏
