Panasonic Lumix S5 vs Panasonic Lumix G9: which is better for landscape videography?

In this video I compare footages taken with my new camera Panasonic Lumix S5 and with my “old” Panasonic Lumix G9.
Actually I’ve always been happy with mft but I’m not sure about future of this system. That’s why when I saw a a S5 for only 1700€ incl. kit lens, I could not resist the temptation and bought it.
Since that time I’ve been comparing the both cameras in different disciplines and can’t decide which camera I should (?) ditch now.
Can you help me?

I’ve just made the same purchase, I have the GH5 and G9, and now the S5 with 24-105 lens. I’ve just spent 2 days obtaining several hours of footage.
I initially thought I would be selling my micro four thirds gear and getting another S5 and a few lenses, but it’s not that simple.
The S5 has better dynamic range and it is noticeable, if you use similar settings over all three cameras the S5 always looks the best, however the point is in 90% of situations you can get the M43 image to look as good as the S5 especially in cineD or VlogL. Straight out of camera in natural profile the S5 wins.
So conclusion…..I’m keeping both systems, however the full frame will work with wide angle primes and zooms, whilst the M43 cameras will be aimed at mid to telephoto work, after all I would rather use the 100-400 than any full frame equivalent.

Many thanks for your video. I'm glad you didn't went for the AF bs, and the only thing missing is a low light comparison maybe.
You also didn't mentioned the lack of anamorphic settings on the G9, although I think this is somehow surpassable in post.
I'm currently considering selling my G9 to get the S5 - the thing that is stopping me the most is that I absolutely love the G9 - and your video is of great help as well as the insights of your replies in the comments. Again, many thanks

Bying the S5 was the best decision you have made! The differences are so huge, that there is no matter for any comparison here! Grab your S5 and be happy!

the one thing holding me back from buying a S5 is their line up of Leica lenses, too expensive and limited selection lens. Also, a great comparison video, thoroughly enjoyed it.

great comparison vid I have both the g9 and the s5, and they are both amazing cameras. I do wedding photography and videography and you can see the difference. The s5 is better for shooting people as you can see the difference in dynamic range in portraits and also way better in low light, however I find the g9 is a great B cam and is very strong in video and can produce some stunning landscape shots.

great review 👍 After tested both camera, Finally I choose G9 + Leica 12-60 f 2.8-4 than S5 + 20-60mm. I'm mostly in Landscape photography and love hiking. Cheers

I think that with my budget I'd not pass to the S5. The G9 is still awesome. As a fellow Youtuber I am always trying to improve my work with the camera even if I need more dynamic videos because I do martial arts video. Still your video has been relaxing and interesting.

Do not put yourself down it was very good review if not better than some professionals on YT. There is nothing wrong with MFT system and even if they decide to stop producing so what. Personally I have invested so much in MFT glass, but when I check current prices in the shop it looks like it was better investment than gold?? Simply for traveling the weight of the glass is important to me. On the other hand I jumped the ship and got myself S5 with 20-60mm mainly for video and full version of V-log. I am not selling my G9 or GH5...still thinking about GH5s or LUMIX BGH1 to install it on the octocopter.

Thanks for comparison. Maybe S5 is slightly better, but unless you see them side by side I would never notice a difference and for the price difference, and the great selection of lenses available for G9, I think it's the better choice (for me anyway). I have a G9 and no plan to change. Great camera for landscape/travel photography with the 14-140, plenty good primes if you need bigger appetite and wildlife with the 100-400 lens and fine for occasional video. I'm sure the S5 will be better in low light, but I rarely shoot in these conditions, so G9 best option for me.

My thinking is that the S5 offers a brighter, more detailed image with richer and deeper colours - as you should expect with any full-frame camera. However, the images coming from the G9 stand up fairly well against the S5. If you couldn't afford to get a S5 and all the lenses you'd need to go with it, you wouldn't be going too far wrong buying a G9.

That's not to say that I think you made a mistake buying the S5. What matters most is what you think of the image quality, detail and colours coming out of both cameras and deciding which one suits your tastes and needs better.

Great test, i have a g9 and i was about to sell it to get s5 but mostly with an atomos ninza so i can have raw, but when i saw tour test i changed my mind and maby i will buy an atomos ninza only for hdr video, (pitty that ninza does not give proress for g9 also) so you saved my money!

V-log L is on the pink side sometimes, exactly the same tint performance on gh5. S5’s v-log is more easier to match other cameras.

I really like the S5 but two things do not appeal to me: weight combined with lenses and poor lens selection. The Panasonic lenses are good but too expensive. Using MFT you can access more good lenses for less money. The S5 could be interesting in two years.

Чтобы понять, нету ли у G9 перешарпа, попробуйте снять на видео черные буквы на сером фоне. Если перешарп есть, то будут белые контура вокруг черных букв. Это визуально повышает резкость.
У моего Олимпуса при установленном пресете Стандарт (Sharpness =0) имеется перешарп на 2 ступени. И только при установке Sharpness = -2, исчезли белые контура вокруг черных букв. Это для Олимпуса Ом10м2 - недорогая модель. Интересно, как там у Люмикса G9 ? Очень похоже что перешарп есть. Но это для только видео, как и отметили многие владельцы из комментариев.
В RAW файле никакие пресеты не работают и перешарп невозможен принципиально.

Great video comparison. Surprised how well the G9 holds up, I'd assume with the GH6 it would be even closer, though GH6 costs more than the S5 deals around at the moment. Having been thinking of moving from the G9 to the S5, I'm a 100% photographer. The added push/pull in RAW's of the S5 and that bit better detail is a bit draw. The big negative of the S5 though is the weight...20-60 is a bit meh in the corners at 20mm, so would have to get a Sigma/Lumix UW lens, then the 24-105, sigma 100-400 and a macro, to replicate the current 8-16, 12-60, 50-200 and 60mm macro. The big question then though would be, could I be bothered to take out that kit due to the size weight.
Need a G9 with the sensor from the GH6 in it, then that would be good enough.

Как я понимаю в новую GH5mII они поставили начинку от G9.
Очень смутило что при f2, 8 iso 200 mft получаем эквивалент f5, 6 iso100 FF но блин это более чем 4 раза! Понимаю, что для эквивалентного боке нужны 2 стопа, но + двукратное ISO! Всегда считал эквивалентную светосилу мифом, экспозиция кадра была одинаковой в тесте? Или ошибаюсь за счет площадей матриц?
И ещё раз Спасибо за обзор, очень нужный и полезный.
