Godzilla 2014 Blu-ray and DVD Review
Показать описание
Hello, this is Heisenberg, here to show all the available versions of the Godzilla 2014 blu-ray and DVD in the U.S.
As I record this, it is Tuesday, September 16th, 2014, and the Godzilla 2014 movie has just been released on blu-ray and DVD. There are four different versions of the blu-ray and two versions of the DVD. The differences between the four versions of the blu-ray are not large. It is the same movie in each version, and all four versions come with a blu-ray disc, a DVD, and a digital copy. Most of the differences are just different packaging.
Here’s the standard version of the blu-ray, which currently sells for around $20. The online reviews of the blu-ray picture and sound quality are very positive, but they do recommend watching the movie in a dark room, because the movie gets very dark towards the end. The movie has a 7.1 audio track, which they say sounds extremely good. But unfortunately there are not a lot of extras. There is no director’s cut, no deleted scenes, and no audio commentary. There are seven short extras. Some of the extras are short fictional news stories about the monsters, and some are behind the scenes material.
Here is the 3D blu-ray, which currently sells for $28 at amazon. It has the 3D blu-ray, the 2D blu-ray, a DVD, and a digital copy. I don’t have a 3D TV, and I am not very interested in getting one, so I am not going to keep the 3D blu-ray. I would rather have a TV with 4K resolution than a TV with 3D.
The best version, in my opinion, is the Target exclusive blu-ray, which currently costs $23. It has a 30 minute exclusive extra feature, which documents the history of Godzilla and Godzilla movies. Target is the only store with an exclusive extra feature. This Target exclusive blu-ray also has different cover art.
Here is the limited edition MetalPak blu-ray, which sells for $30 at amazon, or $10 more than the standard blu-ray. We do not know how limited it is. The difference with this version is the box, which is made of metal instead of plastic, and has different cover art that is also raised rather than flat. Godzilla and the buildings are raised on the cover. It actually looks really nice. Now, there are three different kinds of metal cases that some blu-rays come in: there are Stealbook cases, IronPack cases, and MetalPak cases. Again, this version is a MetalPak, which is generally considered inferior to a Stealbook case. But this Godzilla MetalPak case has sound! You press this button, and you hear Godzilla roar. For some people, getting a metal case with sound and different and raised art might be worth the extra $10. I am not sure if it is worth an extra $10 to me. It actually looks better than I expected, so I am torn.
So those are the four blu-ray versions in the U.S. There are also two DVD versions. Here is the standard version, which has its special features on a bonus disc. Here is the Walmart exclusive version, which has different cover art and only two of the bonus features (thanks to Jordan H for pointing this out). It is probably has just one disc instead of two discs. Walmart had advertised that they would have an exclusive blu-ray with this cover art, but that appears not to be true. Myself and many others looked, but there was no such blu-ray in the Walmart stores. Walmart has done a lousy job of releasing Godzilla. I recommend avoiding them.
Let me also mention that there are other versions of the Godzilla blu-ray for sale in other countries. Again, it is the same movie. What is different is the packaging. For example, in Canada, the store Future Shop has an exclusive stealbook blu-ray with different cover art. One way to find out more about all the different versions is to go to the community forums on the web site Hi-Def Ninja. There is no international version that really stands out to me, so I will not try to get any of them.
Now, if you want to get the Godzilla blu-ray for less, you could wait and buy it around the holidays, when it will probably be on sale. I think there’s a good chance that some store will sell it for a very low price on Black Friday, which is the day after Thanksgiving. For example, last year on Black Friday, Target sold the Pacific Rim blu-ray for just $6.
So there you have it: Godzilla 2014 out on blu-ray, with a variety of packaging to choose from. This is Heisenberg, hoping you enjoy your Godzilla blu-ray.
