Writing off a ransom as a business expense is one of the most german things i can think of

I’m so relieved that Aldi’s origin story is just batshit crazy instead of diabolically evil. Aldi and Trader Joe’s are two of my favorite stores. Costco is still the GOAT though.

Aldi is awesome they actually try to keep prices down for the consumer.

Calling a ransom a business expense has got to be some kind of power move.

You left out the most insane details, when the company split they drew a line of demarcation through Germany so as to not interfere with each other and later on divided the entire world between them like Spain and Portugal in the treaty of Tordesillas, but for groceries.

What's cool from my POV is about a couple of years before Aldi moved over to the US, I was involved in doing surveys for companies, sort of like a professional. I'd get requests for "Hey, we have these gigs, do any of them sound like something you'd want to do? Here's how much they pay, " and I'd select which ones I wanted to do and get cash. Anyway, one of them was for an unidentified grocery store that wanted shoppers' opinions on layout, location to home, and cost. So for me, it was "I'm fine with generic food, provided the cost was fairly low, I love the idea of a small grocery store rather than a huge Walmart layout, and yeah, it'd be nice to be within either walking distance or at least less than five miles." And then about a year later, I saw an announcement for Aldi and the store layout was exactly what I saw in the survey. So cool! I was one of the survey takers that convinced them to take a chance.

*Fun *unrelated fact: Apparently, ransom payments actually are tax deductible business expenses in the US!* 🙃*
Unfun fine print: The FBI prefers that ransomware attack victims don't pay the ransom. However, if the company does pay, it is tax deductible, but not if the ransom is paid by a ransomware insurance policy.

*Edit: Someone got confused and thought I was saying US tax law played a role in the Aldi/Heinz thing, I was not. It's just funny that ransom payments are allowed in the US. Hope this helps.
*Edit #2: added 🙃 so people know not to take the comment too seriously. My comment isn't legal or financial advice, please talk to your lawyer or CPA before you kidnap or extort a business or person.🙃 Again, hope this helps.

I work for Aldi and as a part of orientation they gave us there history. What most people don't know is that Albrich discount was actually started by the two brothers mother as a small grocer. After her passing the brothers took it over and began the chain.

Why is anyone shocked that two men who were of fighting age during WWII, from a country involved in WWII, fought in WWII?

Don’t forget that Aldis doesn’t play music over the speakers bc it saves them money thus keeping prices low AND making it much better for any neuro-spicy people (or people who just don’t enjoy soft rock/pop with the grocery trip)

Early German efficiency.

It either led to wars, market domination or both

1930s/40s Germany there was a draft, so unless a German man from that time period was in specific units (SS units or the like) they really shouldn't be treated as suspect.

They actually didn’t have a falling out, one brother wanted cigarettes in the store a d the other didn’t so they decided to split them north and south but they still worked together and help each other
