On Government Secrets
Howdy! I'm Sean Haugh, running as a Libertarian for US Senate in North Carolina in 2016.
Why does our government keep so many secrets from us? Our government is supposed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. How can the people take control of their government if they aren't allowed to know so much about what it's doing?
I'm glad to see those classified 28 pages of the 9/11 Commission report is now a national issue. We have every right to know who was behind that attack against us. The only possible reason why this would kept secret from us is that we the people might want to change our foreign policy if we knew the truth.
But there's so much more. An appeals court just decided that we don't get to see the Senate Torture Report documenting our abuses of human rights in conducting this misguided War on Terror. Again, the only reason to keep this under wraps is the American people would be outraged if they only knew the extent of our own government's crimes.
Then there's our campaign finance system. Our laws currently allow people to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections without anyone knowing about it until years later.
I could go on at great length listing all the secret information about what our government is doing that we have every right to know. All of it needs to be released to the American people now.
One of my personal heroes is Senator Mike Gravel from Alaska. He was the guy on the inside who helped Daniel Ellsberg leak the Pentagon Papers and tell the people what was really happening in our War in Vietnam.
As your Senator, I will do everything in my power to ensure you know about everything done in your name and with your tax dollars.
Richard Burr, working closely with his ally Dianne Feinstein on the Senate Intelligence Committee, has fought at every step to keep all these secrets from you. You deserve a Senator who is going to tell you the truth.
I'm Sean Haugh, a wide open person for wide open government.
