I think the dad being bigger was the reason why he died
If you watched the scene where Arlo was in the water, you see him ducking under trees to avoid sharp beaches and he hits a lot of sharp rocks
The dad being bigger would mean he wouldn't be able to avoid any of the trees or rocks, he mostly likely got impaled rather than drowned

I'm just going to point out the obvious that Arlo's dad died because the father didn't know how to swim and Arlo probably survived down the river because it wasn't as bad as the river/flood was severely bad for the father

honestly "what if the meteor never hit and dinosaurs continued to live and evolve" is a really cool idea. like an awesome one. imagine a movie about speculative made up dinosaur evolution were the dinosaurs are anatomically correct and continued to evolve and rule the earth? there is no limit there is so much you could do with that idea. if i wasn't so untalented i would probably just make the movie myself

For a second I thought they were going to make fun of how violent it could have been at the beginning if Arlo killed the human child on their first meeting. It was funny to see the family ransack them, but it could have been included as an "or like this" segment.
