Japan is one of the most adaptable countries in the world. It is capable of very rapid change, even after crises that would halt the progress of other nations. When the shogunates collapsed in the 17th century, the feudal system disintegrated. Within time, though, railroads replaced ox carts. During World War I, a first-rate economy sprung up on deserted farmlands. During World War II, the modest islands of Japan burgeoned into an empire with one of the most powerful navies in the world. After the devastation of that world war, Japan emerged as one of the most modern countries in the world. The Japanese have survived frequent earthquakes and tsunamis and rebuilt their cities using enviable technologies.

In 1614 a small group of Japanese including samurai, made it to the aztec empire into Mexico city (New Spain), traveled the silver roads and I read were used to fend off Chichimec raiders. They eventually make it all the way to Rome to be baptized..the daimyo of Sendai, Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga. After that trip they entered that phase of no European contact

Isolation was a good call. If we look around the world we see how European colonisation devastated economies, cultures all around the world. Had they not isolated themselves and fallen under the influence of Western Europe, they may be in the same state now as many post-Colonial countries are. It wasn't all good, but I think the world would have lost another culture to greed.

I pay my tributes to the Tokugawa Shoguns for saving Japan’s future and preserving Japan’s ancient cultures of Shinto Shrines, Buddhist Temples and having Confucianism take part of the social media as well during the Edo Period! Staying isolated from European Colonial Powers was the right thing to do as Japan, Korea and China stayed isolated for centuries of peace and prosperity!

Korea isolated itself twice as hard as Japan. Not even allowing dutch merchants to trade with them. China too was hardline isolationists but europeans wanted their tea and porcelain too much to tolerate that (opium wars)

The reason they self isolate themselves because of the leaders of Japan hated change especially that if it displaces their heirchy. China did the same thing.

These "Japan isolated itself" arguments are wrong. If you want to see isolation, look at China. Rangaku enabled Japan a channel to learn about western scientific progress whether it be sailing, astronomy or food, you name it; japan wanted it which the Dutch were only to happy to share with Japan. Rangaku is short for O Ran Da; Japan loves to shorten words so it became Ran gaku (gaku means schooling/learning). thank you for introducing Nakahama Manjiro story as well; superb 👍🙏⛩💯

This video shows wrong images for Edo period. Some pictures such as 0:23 2:17 4:17 represent scenes in Meiji period after the isolation policy ended.

This video failed to mention how Commodore Mathew Perry was attacked by two "Veiled Edge" assassins and rescued by a ninja clad in blue 😉

They blamed the civil war on the foreign missionaries? First I've heard of that. Xavier arrived in Japan in 1549. Sengoku Jidai started in 1467...

This isolation is imposed on the country and suppression of Christianity occurred because Tokugawa ieyasu won the the Tokugawa won the war ultimately. If another daimyo lord from samurai families such Oda, Toyotomi, Takeda, Uesugi, Imagawa, Hojo or another clan defeated everyone else and became the shogunate, things will be very different. It is impossible to say how the difference would be like, but it certainly will a lot different from how it was like under the Tokugawa shogunate.
