my musical tribute to Warren William Zevon (January 24, 1947--September 7, 2003)American rock singer-songwriter and musician noted for including his sometimes sardonic opinions of life in his musical lyrics, composing songs that were sometimes humorous and often had political or historical themes..rest in peace

lyrics :Written By Warren Zevon
c. 1982 Zevon Music BMI
I saw her leave the luau
With the one who parked the cars
And the fat one from the swimming pool
They were swaying arm in arm
I could hear the ukuleles playing
Down by the sea
She's gone with the hula hula boys
She don't care about me
She's gone with the hula hula boys
She don't care about me
They're singing,
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana (everybody sing the chorus together now!) or
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana (get to the point...cut to the chase)
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Yesterday she went to see
The Polynesian band
But she came home with her hair all wet
And her clothes all filled with sand
I didn't have to come to Maui
To be treated like a jerk
How do you think I feel
When I see the bellboys smirk?
And I can hear the ukuleles playing
Down by the sea
She's gone with the hula hula boys
She don't care about me
They're signing,
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana

we hear this is a particular favorite of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson)

Great song - at first it seems lyrically and melodically like a humourous, light hearted affair but quickly you realize its a desperately sad song - the sign of a great songwriter. RIP warren - some of us do not forget

Warren has a way of making songs that literally touch your soul.

A brilliant song, what else do we expect from the great man? I play this on my guitar, it's quite easy to play, but singing the chorus is difficult.

Somehow this is up their with the best of Zevon's song's, it capture's betrayal and humuliation in a perfect poignant but yet beautiful ballad

hunter s thompson was a big fan of warren and his music and in an interview somewhere he had mentioned that the hula hula boys was his favorite song so i figured to show him some respect too.

Only Warren Zevon could or would have written such a candid, self-effacing song such as this.

One of his greatest songs. But then you can say that about ALL of them. :-) Vale, Excitable Boy.

No one could pull off sarcasm with a great melody, like WZ

Warren was/is THE GREAT ONE!  Saw him 30+ times, his music additively sublime and it ages better than OPUS 1.
Miss ya.

If any of you devoted Zevonites out there want an amazing book, chock-full of great photos of WZ, I STRONGLY recommend George Gruel's "Lawyers Guns And Photos", available from Big Gorilla Books. And no, there's nothing in it for me to recommend this book, ya cynical buggers, except that I enjoy my copy SO much, and want to share with like minds. Just as I spread the word: ZEVON LIVES!!! Y'see, I took a page from George Carlin, who said once that he prayed to Joe Pesci, cuz JOE would get things done. So I pray to my God Of Music, Warren Zevon, and I've noticed a higher percentage of affirmative answers with WZ than with JC. Gods and Legends never die, and Warren is BOTH!!!

Anthony, you did a great job with this video. So freakin' cool. Excitable Boy was my first purchase of Warren's work. I wore that cassette (yikes) out. My musical interests have meandered over the years, but I always go back to my favorites, the singer songwriters being guys like Dylan, Young, Zevon, and, before them, Clapton and Joel. Recently, I've been listening almost exclusively to Warren. Go through phases like that. Hunter is one of my top three writing heroes, the others being Kerouac and Hemingway. Some range, huh. Anyway. Fantastic and perfect images here. Made me laugh and feel like crying. But laughter won out when listenin' to Hula and seein' fat boy and stuff. Thanks, man.

Been reading curse of lono currently and was curious when I got to that page. Not really my kind of music but it definetly fit the purpose of playing in the background while reading about that madlad skinner clubbing a streetdog.
