One of the things I hate about government employment is how hard it is to get rid of bad employees. The employees have more rights than an endangered species.

I am prior military, I finally bit the bullet and joined the VA this past spring. It's NOT perfect, but I'm thankful for my salary as a GS11, which was a major salary increase for me compared to my previous job in the private sector, the benefits and job stability, and the bonus I received when I wasn't even expecting one. I have NEVER gotten a bonus before in my life.

The best thing is the worst thing. Job security. Good employees can get dragged through the mud and humiliated by simple gossip, while the bad employees can do the gossip, do no work, and can’t be fired. The job security is the single most frustrating thing if you actually care when you walk through the door about the quality of what you produce.

Government jobs are for stability. Not for performance. For a married couple, one work for a government job to cover health insurance for the family, the another works in private for better income without needing to buy health insurance. How cool.

Also, in the federal government, performance evaluations are frequently subjective. My previous supervisor, the last person to be promoted spent time with her outside of work, attending weddings, birthday parties, baby showers, and other similar events. Workers who gossip with her and sit down with her during lunchtime will be promoted. And one of these individuals had a reputation for being lazy.

The waiting game with the government and their overall hiring process gives you insight on the dysfunctionality. So buckle up.

I dedicated 20 years to the Army Reserves and 15 years to federal government service. This year, I made the decision to resign. While job security in the government was solid, I found myself yearning for personal and professional growth as a leader—growth that the rigid government system no longer supported.

The environment I experienced often lacked innovation and ambition, primarily because underperforming employees faced minimal consequences for their lack of effort. The antiquated systems and a culture rooted in “this is how we’ve always done it” stifled creativity and progress. For individuals who are highly educated, hold advanced degrees, and demonstrate the ability to excel in more challenging roles, there should be opportunities to grow based on merit, not solely by climbing the GS scale -only.

Ultimately, I realized that comfort is the ultimate hindrance to growth. To truly evolve as a leader and professional, I needed to step away from the comfort and familiar and pursue opportunities that align with my new updated career goals.

The cash bonus is laughable after taxes. I opt for time off in place of a cash award.

Leadership is pretty terrible. Why don't employees get to rate their supervisors?

Training is terrible. Why is the GS 7 always training the GS 12?

The job announcement doesn't give a good description of the duties.

26 years in USPS IT as a developer - I could have made a lot more money in the private sector. But I have a no layoff clause in my union contract and I've never had to worry about not having a job. My supervisors are pretty chill, and I get a lot of neat things done for the American people. Plus I can now work remotely and live anywhere I want! USPS is also insulated somewhat and not as affected by political whims of current presidents. One downside of USPS is there is no locality pay - but I live out in the boonies - where the cost of living is low. I'll take federal (or in my case, Postal) service any day over the private sector. I pay into FERS, TSP, and should be able to get my full retirement when I hit MRA.

I absolutely despise my job (I'm a GS-10). My max promotion level is GS-11. I work harder than several of my coworkers who make more than me. The only good thing has been being able to take off virtually whenever I wanted, so long as it was in reason.

I've been a public servant for the past 34 years. No regrets. I like to work in a structured environmental, with clearly defined rules. I like the stability, my pay is equitable, fair and clearly defined.

I hated my govt. job! People were so unprofessional, cheating on their spouse within the unit, management on a power trip. I said fuck this!!!

Govt jobs let you take your annual and sick leave without the boss trying to fire you.

I got a good Manager at work... then they transfered me and our team to a new manager and things have been stressful. A few of the team left for another team and are in greener pastures. They're the lucky ones...

I’m a GS 7 being downgraded to a GS 6 due to a desk audit. I’m 61 years old 100% remote due to mobility issues. Going on 14 years of service..I am a hard worker rated at outstanding. I work for VHA. I’m stressed.
