How to Get a Graphic Design Job in LA

Do companies discriminate against non US based designers? What if there aren't many opportunities for designers where you are from? What if your culture or business people don't value you design?

We live in a global, connected community of creative people. Should it matter where you are born? Is there hope for people living in markets that don't appreciate design like India, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East for example?

What advice do we have for designers?

11:15 What are your thoughts on a broad or generalist portfolio?
13:20 Trojan horse concept. Be focused in your presentation.
15:38 Do companies look to other markets to find cheaper talent?
18:00 Downward pressure from global competition.
18:54 Are there job opportunities in America for foreign born designers?
19:45 What kind of range or creative flexibility are you looking for?
20:20 Communication might be an issue. It's important to share a common language.
24:57 We are all in the customer service business. Being arrogant will mean a short lived relationship.

5:15 Absolutely correct! 👍 "India values quantity over quality" that's why we are behind, talent in us is dying.

Btw, thanks for the video, it really helps!

This video is great. I am also a UX designer from India. I second her thoughts about design culture in India. in fact, Indian talent feels suffocated here and most of us feel like working in US and Europe so we can get better project and clients.

One of the best video I found on The Futur's Youtube channel. This is totally true. The design culture and the things a designer has to face in their daily routine is really very tough. Most people are after quantity rather than Quality. Also, the fact that the designers or talented people in mostly Asian countires are not paid according to their skills and talent. Thank you Chris for such a valueable video. You are a true inspiration.

Some things I’ve learned from the video that I want to share:
Practice English
Focus in one field
You need a very good portfolio
You need versatility
Costumer service is the key

Thank you so much for an amazing video. I am an international student studying Marketing and Graphic Design in the U.S. There are very few opportunities for a graphic designer in Vietnam. I really want to work in the U.S., so this video is very helpful.

Damn! how have I missed this video! I'm from India and I'm a self-taught graphic designer and i currently am the C.E.O & Creative Director of my company Lalith's Gallery™. It has been a dream for me to get an internship at THE FUTUR and work under Chris Do and team. I'm working extensively hard despite my schedule where i'm being a real life scientist working in a lab for the most of my day.

so glad to have come across this video! i'm from the philippines. and i have the same sentiments. its really frustrating. i have work experience in design for almost a year now since i graduated and the design culture here is very saturated. i feel like the clientelle here isn't that driven towards really good design, and settle for what's 'safe, cheap, and fast'. So its really quantity > quality. With that being said, there wasn't really enough opportunity to 'defend my design' & build quality works for my portfolio, except through independent/passion projects. haha. *sigh* anyways, gread vid! i wish there were more companies like Blind that don't mind the location of an applicant. But realistically speaking, nearly every design studio i come across are not willing to get/sponsor applicants from overseas ):

Very useful video. Even I am facing same problem while working, they need quality & quantity at the same time. I worked on many different things from last 3 years & I am still feel like I am a fresher.

Chris your a great teacher. I met lot of people who won't share their knowledge or appreciate to someone younger than them in position. I am glad she got a job at Blind, will help her grow miles in her career.

This is different but good interview. and i can totally relate to this as i m in same market where quantity matters more than quality.
I have worked locally and internationally as a Logo & Identity Designer and by comparing things i got to know that international market has more scope than this cheaper countries.

anyway.. #LoveIndia and keep boosting us @Chris sir :)
