Are Car Covers Good Or Bad? | 2 MINUTE TUESDAY

I'm not a fan of using a car cover for this simple reason: I'd rather wash off dust than remove scratches. Yes, if your paint is soft enough, a car cover can scratch it no matter how careful you are. If maintaining a swirl-free paint job is important to you, it might be time to reconsider using that cover.

Funny story - The image in this thumbnail was stolen by one of those shady Ebay/Amazon sellers and they photoshopped their car cover on it. So I stole it back and used it for this video. Suck on that.

Covers arent for those with a car garage guy. Its for those that have to park their car under trees near sprinklers or under lamp posts. This means sap, water marks, and bird crap

What if it's stored outside ? surely covering against the elements is preferable to being uncovered

Issue is UV damage etc. Which is what a car cover is mainly used for or hail protection etc.

For dust protection in a sealed garage you use a soft dust cover.

A cover to protect it from uv rays not dust

If you have a car sitting outside in the sun for days on end, a good quality car cover would be advisable. You need to start with a clean car, and keep up with putting on the car only on a clean car. If you wait too long and the car gets dirty, you need to wait before you use the cover again. I think for cars that sit for long periods of time out in the elements, especially bright hot sun, a car cover makes great sense. But a daily driver sitting in a garage, I wouldn't use one.

I drive a truck for a living. Therefore, I park my car at the terminal for up to a month at a time. I've been using car covers for the last 10 years without issues. One might be concerned about a little dust scratching the paint. I'm more concerned about the effects of UV rays, bird crap, and foliage. If you get it washed and drive it one mile before parking, there won't be enough dirt on it to make any difference.

As far as storing your car inside, the dust that accumulates on the surface isn't the reason for a cover. The indoor cover is there to protect the areas where dust can get into the car, like the cowell and inner portions of the doors, hood, and trunk lid.

My truck sits outside under a tree and gets pooped on constantly. Light scratches are 100% better than the bird dropping getting etched into the paint.

I just woke up to the landscape company triming bushes right above my car, they scratched the crap out of my car.
If I had a car cover it would have saved it from that probably

I use car cover for years now. My car sits outside in baking sun. Keep it waxed and cover shall protect you from lot of crap that can land on your car including UV rays.

A cover is still better than nothing especially if stored outside. Bird droppings will do much more harm than dust. If one is keeping their car in a museum is one thing. No one is suggesting using a heavy compound every time there's minor surface imperfections. Certainly want car pretty clean when placing a cover on it. It also depends on the quality of the cover. Bird droppings is a lot worse no question. Some things are unavoidable. One goes to a ball game or a movie or out to dinner, and sees bird droppings on their car. Light buffing with light polish shouldn't hurt anything. All cars will get scratches from things in the air while driving on highways.

The instruction manual for my Rav4 does not tell me to park the car in a garage or in a shaded spot. It also doesn't tell me to use a car cover. What it does tell me is to keep the car clean and waxed. The car is ceramic coated and I regularly protect the coating with a ceramic sealant. The car sits outside. You wouldn't believe how much damage to the clear coat and paint trapped moisture can do. It would be much better to neglect the car outside than to throw a car cover.

I think with all these new paint protection products..wax and so on a regular deep cleanse is a car cover I'd do the same thing if I had a garage...Toyota fan here to :)

Your opinion is a valid one but not a universal one. I have owned many vehicles over the past 20 years and because of the industry I retired from I had them all fully wrapped. I have more cars than garage space so the ones outside have always had covers and I can say 100% the covers protect the wrap vinyl from UV damage, water spotting and bird sh*t. So, while my covers have preserved a $100, 000* vehicle inventory, I would never trash their value like you have over a $5k vehicle on a good day!

Micro scratches are way better than the complete destruction UV damage can do! Where I live, if you park outside, brand new car, within 10 years your paint is severely damaged by the sun exposure

What if you use a special car brush before putting the cover on?
