ABOUT THE MOVIE

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” is an all-new musical-comedy welcoming audiences to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen. Featuring the voices of Academy Award®-winning actor Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film is helmed by Oscar®-winning director Chris Buck (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (“Encanto”). Jennifer Lee (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) executive produces—Lee and Allison Moore (“Night Sky,” “Manhunt”) are writers on the project. With original songs by Grammy®-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice, plus score by composer Dave Metzger, “Wish” opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023.

I like how Asha mentioned people trying to fulfill their wishes themselves and Magnifico says how most wouldn’t want to put in that much effort

I'm glad we got to see the whole clip for this. I know a lot of people were criticising it as escalating too quickly in the trailer, but I had a feeling it was edited.

Now this is how a conversation between a hero and villain should be. Both Asha and King Magnifico have very valid points, but both are flawed in a way. King Magnifico is right about not all wishes need to be granted, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be returned. Asha is right about how everyone deserves better, but that doesn't mean all wishes are that worthy.

Honestly, respect.

Magnifico *is* a proper villain, yes, but he knows that he can only do so much for so many people, and is honest about it.

‘People give me their wishes because they don’t believe they can accomplish them on their own’ is actually an insanely good rebuttal to Asha’s argument. The people of Rosas get to choose ONE wish, why would anyone waste it on something like ‘sailing’ or ‘having a family’ or ‘writing a song’? Clearly they think a 1/1000 shot at instant gratification is a better deal than just putting in a bit of effort
Then Asha could reply that they have been CONDITIONED not to believe in themselves by the system Magnifico created and actually demonstrate an iota of intelligence

It would probably be cool if the climax was magnifico going insane and granting a bunch of wishes, but adding sinister flares to them. For example, someone wishes for the kingdom to be happy, so magnifico unleashes a massive cloud throughout the entire kingdom that causes almost everyone to go into mass hysteria

This scene sets up an interesting premise. Also, the voice acting is really good here, both from Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine.

Let me say I just love how Magnifico is showing a good portion of how dark he can get! The line he spoke (1:05) really nailed it hard, and gave Asha, and maybe us, a pretty good stunned fright!

“Well, you’re young. You don’t know anything, really…”
This gave me such Mother Gothel vibes.

I like this scene. I wish they had tried to sneak a little bit more of it into the trailer, since the trailer made it seem like Asha was the unreasonable one.

Here she admits that not every wish is good, and granting every single one is unfeasible. Her problem isn't Magnifico not granting wishes, it's that he's selfishly hoarding them and erasing people's memories.

I really like that they make Magnifico’s ideology genuinely flawed. He wants to help people with their problems while understanding the importance of self-reliance. However, his solution is to take that initial desire away from people, cutting them off from their own humanity, as if having that desire made them weak in the first place. Wishes, however, don’t do that. They are the very motivation behind people’s actions.

I feel like Magnifico is a representation of soulless executives who have more say about the fate of animated projects than the artists.

I had a suspicion when I heard the "Welcome to Rosas" song that the catch to giving Magnifico your wish at the ceremony would be that you would forget what your wish was. And in that song, Asha says Magnifico only grants one wish a month; 12 wishes a year. So the vast majority of the townspeople will live their whole life without their wish.

Wow. Chris Pine really is great at being the villain

Love the lighting in this 💖 you can tell Magnifico is one of those villains who believes he’s in the right, and the backlighting at the end hints at something more sinister to come- I’m really looking forward to Wish 👀

Magnifico not giving the wishes back actually makes sense to me. Part of the deal is that they forget what that wish was. They wouldn't be so dissatisfied or even resentful about their ungranted wish if they didn't know what it is. Removing envy and greed. Ignorance is bliss. The people of Rosas are HAPPIER this way. Asha is asking to mess up a good thing.

… Oh yeah, this guys *definitely* gonna be a great *Disney villain.*

“You make it so they forget the most beautiful part of themselves.”
So, him taking the wishes from the people is like him literally taking a piece of their _souls._ That’s… actually kinda terrifying.

Now we understand that he is a REAL villain with the trailer we think he is right not to fulfill everyone's wishes but he wants to keep them alone. And with this extract Asha didn't have it so "adokable" but more mature than she looked. I think this film is too criticized when it's better than we think

Very intense scene right here. King magnifico is a very proper Villian. I think he wants to keep everyone's wishes for himself.
