The surge in new COVID cases is putting an enormous strain on hospitals across the country, making it difficult for them to treat people with other health emergencies. "CBS This Morning" lead national correspondent David Begnaud reports on a tragic case: A U.S. veteran in Bellville, Texas, who couldn't get the medical attention he needed because of a lack of space.

Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

I served with Daniel in Afghanistan and after all he has been through, it breaks my heart to see him pass from a treatable diagnosis.

I am so so sorry for Daniel and his family. This is exactly what we are warning people about but they just don't get it.

The fact that hospitals isn’t leaving at least 3-5 non covid beds open doesn’t sit right with me. He lost his life because people refused to get vaccinated but want hospitals to save them.

This is heartbreaking. I feel ashamed that my country couldn’t do better for a military veteran. As a society the infighting must stop, because Daniel should be alive.

When 'Daniel' shows up at the emergency room it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they made room for him by sending an unvaccinated, incurable Covid patient down to the Covid tent to await the inevitable...'Daniel' can be saved, it's simple triage.

They need to deny services to non vaccinated people service in favor of those that are or other medical emergencies

This is why there are mandates in other places
When ICU bed availability can’t meet the needs of the community then shut down the city.

This death is on you, Gov. Abbott, and it's actually on everyone who voted for Abbott too. Elections have consequences. Prayers and condolences to Daniel Wilkinson's loved ones.

They should remove the unvaccinated to make room for an emergency patient who didn't choose to become ill.

Anti vaxxers and anti maskers should have the lowest priority for ICU beds. After all, they've been saying:

'If I die, I die. Freedom!'

It's sad that this man couldn't get any help

Well told story- and may he rest peacefully. This is why I have social-distanced so strictly- we need hospital beds to not fill up otherwise we are in big trouble. The 'my freedoms' need to get this.

Infuriating!! All you anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers need to stay at home!! You don’t believe in science? Then don’t look to science to treat you when you’re sick with Covid!! Leave the ICU beds available for the rest of us! RIP dear Daniel! My deepest condolences to his family and friends.🙏

No ICU beds for the vaccine refusers. They made their choice let them face the consequences. Medical care for non-covid patients, covid patients who couldn't get vaxxed due to medical reasons and breakthrough cases should be the priority.

Wow. I can’t imagine fighting for this country only to die from something preventable due to selfish anti-vaxers. 😔

Unvaccinated folks shouldn't run to the hospital at the last minute and take up any valuable resources. Just stay where you are and live with what you've chosen!
