This oral history records Dr. Kryder’s contributions to the advancement of data storage technology and products. He worked in industry (IBM and Seagate) as well as in academia (Caltech, Univ. of Regensburg and CMU). At CMU, he founded and directed what became the Data Storage and Systems Center, one of the country’s largest and most effective industry-government-university collaborations. At IBM, as a research staff member he investigated the dynamics of magnetic bubble memories. At Seagate, as VP of Research and CTO he directed teams responsible for developing perpendicular magnetic recording, full disk encryption and heat assisted magnetic recording. His contributions, as an individual and leader, had a significant positive impact on the data storage industry.
