Also, the New York City is a character in the movie too. A lot of inner dialogue is the relationship between Travis (protagonist) and New York City (a character) of that time. Also, the movie is a depiction of morality too -- the society rewards his actions which are heroic BUT his original intended actions were of horrific nature which failed only because of circumstantial reasons not because of a guilt or wisdom related epiphany. The inner functioning of Travis Bickle remains similar to Patrick Bateman, only the society views him as a hero.
