After a mob of demonstrators stormed the Capitol building on Wednesday interrupting a joint session of Congress to certify president-elect Joe Biden, Republican Sen. Mitt Romney voiced strong disapproval for Trump, stating: "We gather today due to a selfish man's injured pride and the outrage of his supporters whom he has deliberately misinformed for the past two months and stirred to action this very morning.” Referring to the riots, he said "what happened here today was an insurrection incited by the president."
Romney also told the Senate that "no congressional audit is ever going to convince these voters, particularly when the president will continue to say that the election was stolen." He went on to say the only thing to do as a leader is to deliver the truth: "Trump lost the election and president-elect Joe Biden won."
Referring to the losing comment, he referenced his own presidential loss to Barack Obama in 2012, saying: “I’ve had that experience myself; it’s no fun!”
One woman was killed after a mob of protesters stormed the Capitol building, interrupting a joint session of Congress that was viewed by President Donald Trump and his supporters as a final chance to overturn the election results. Lawmakers and press members were forced to shelter in place as police attempted to regain order.
