I love the fact that Grand Seiko have elevated the humble quartz movement to this level. The attention to detail here is bonkers. Keep the reviews coming!

All GS cases including this one are Zaratsu polished.

Another interesting fact, this dial (which they call Silk Sun Ray) is their most complex and labour intensive dial (more than the patterned ones).

This is a luxury watch, with history and great craftsmanship. If all quartz mechanisms would look like this one I'm sure they will receive much more love.

Still can’t believe it’s been unclaimed!! Beauty of a watch Gary!

GS 9F Quartz watches are so underappreciated and neglected. And the technical data list is just bonkers!

I am a sucker for a beautiful champagne dial. And thank you so much for educating us on that spectacular quartz movement. Really opened my eyes.

I have a 1977 King Quartz. (In early 70s Seiko rebranded Grand Seiko and King Seiko to Grand Quartz and King Quartz as Quartz was so far superior to mechanical movements.) The movement keeps perfect time over the several years that I've owned it. It was rated at +/- 10 seconds per month from factory, but much better than that. 45 years old, no issues.

The lack of text above the 6 is actually a plus. Admire the dial instead of reading WR50M or Quartz or something else.

I think I disagree with you about the empty space on the bottom of the dial. It’s something we are used to seeing but this dial is so gorgeous that being empty gives you more visually to appreciate.

As an owner of an Omega quartz for 34 years with it still going strong and accurate with only regular battery changes over those years, I fail to understand the mechanical snobbery originally cultivated by a dying Swiss industry. It's a beautiful watch with a wonderful movement .

Love it. My fave though is the Citizen 0100. + - 1 second per year. Cheers.

Fascinating the accuracy of this watch as well as how the mechanisms work. Amazing! Thank you for sharing. Great review!

I bought the SBGX285 while I was in Osaka, 2019. Similar to your watch, limited edition. Negotiated 10% discount and no vat. Beautiful watch and a joy to wear. No battery needed yet!! Gained one second since I bought it. I fitted an expensive lightweight red/scarlet strap, I get so many comments on it. Perfect quartz watch

GS is truly second to none. I started in this hobby just collecting quartz pieces but once I learned about GS it really made me start appreciating the top end of horology today.

Have to say I have never understood the reverence so many watch fans have for Grand Seiko, never thought they were in the same class as Rolex, Omega, etc, until I watched this video. I was wrong, am extremely impressed and they clearly belong, perhaps even leading the class given the price. Thanks for the education Gary!

Sublime. I think this ticks all the boxes. High accuracy, and beautiful attention to detail. And having a luxury quartz piece would be a stellar addition to any collection.

So many things to say about this video. Firstly - thank you; your love of watches in general and appreciation of this piece in particular makes the factual content very easy to watch. If you did a 45 minute video on this watch, maybe including some q/a with some of the other people you mentioned, I would watch it! 😁
Secondly - ah Seiko.... All the content about the movement and the indices (they're diffraction gratings) is why I fell in love with Seiko; all the comments on the bracelet on a watch costing $2k are why I fell out of love with Seiko (I'm now down to 2 from 'embarrassing' - both solar quartz).
Thirdly - quartz movements - keep going. The fact (and it is a fact) is that all quartz movements are far, far more complex than the lossy 400 year old technology on which mechanical watch movements are based. We tend to forget that when the Astron was released in 1969 it cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of about $12k. Quartz movements are not inherently cheap; they're cheap now as a result of the microprocessor and printed circuit manufacturing revolution - itself a miracle of modern science and mass manufacturing technology that we take for granted. Probably the best video I've seen on quartz movements is on Steve Mould's channel - but even he glosses over the small matter of analog to digital conversion, miniaturised in a wristwatch in 1969. For anyone reading this who may be sceptical, I honestly believe that once you understand what's going on inside a quartz movement, your appreciation of them, and what Seiko actually achieved back in 1969, will grow exponentially.

For those who do not want to worry about a battery and jumping seconds hand, there is the Spring Drive with 9R65 movements with an automatic rotor with sweeping seconds hand and the prices of GS models with these inside are rising. Seiko as a brand are a separate entity. Grand Seiko is in a stratosphere of their own. It took me quite some time to really get to know what they are all about and glad I did.

Brings a whole new meaning to be the in two ticks ! You’d be there a tick early!
19mm lug is common in vintage Seiko actually and many omega. Still odd to see in modern but not surprising either. Possibly a proportion thing to go with the odd 37mm case. I’ve owned many 36 and 38 but never a 37!

Stunning watch and yes the technology is breathtaking in what they can do with quartz .
