Small world alert: I've crossed paths with both of these gentlemen: I met LTC Grossman at a LE training he did in Albuquerque in '06 and I was a prof at Mobap for ten years in the 90s. LTC Grossman signed my copies of OK and OC and they are on my shelf right behind me. His presentation was one of the most fascinating I've ever attended. Great podcast!

Thank you for this.
As the wife (26yrs married) of a multi-war, multi-tour USMC combat veteran this conversation was extremely helpful and confirming of my personal experiences. I look forward to reading the book!

I am a Vietnam veteran. My assignments put me in the twilight zone between very safe and very dangerous. I didn't develop PTSD but rather a loathing for what the experience did to the young men of my generation. We were at best ignored when we came home. 60, 000+ of us died for a cause that the country wasn't committed to. Have I been suicidal over it, no, but rather depressed when think about it. I suspect that many other VN veterans have had the same experience.

Now we have Afghanistan veterans home from another foreign policy fiasco. Hopefully the country has learned that sacrificing our military for nation building projects is folly. I have my doubts.

I watched this yesterday, and I am forced to conclude that your friend is a fool. I'm a 2 time Iraq veteran (Army) with 100per. rating for PTSD. The days when a veteran feels most suicidal is not the ones he does not get enough sleep. They are the days when well-meaning Christians tell them that their illness is caused by lack of faith, by demonic possession, that Jesus will break their chains if they only ask, that taking medication will cause them to lose their testimony for Christ, OR that taking their life will consign them to eternal hellfire. The cause of veteran suicide is gracelessness from Christians. And it will continue to get worse until we actually repent OF these sinful attitudes.

I have had four suicides in my family, not a SINGLE one was caused by lack of sleep or playing too many videogames. They were caused by very REAL depression.

The examples I gave are not ONLY reasons why veterans keep dying by their own hands. They are ALSO the reason why an astonishing number of veteran Christians are fleeing churches altogether (myself included). Because you are all "doctors of no effect."
