How to fix filename is too long error - Source path too long error [ Windows 10/8.1/8/7 ]

Techgurumore show you how to fix “Filename is too long error” and “Source path too long error” in Windows 10/8.1/8/7. Windows Explorer gave that error when we tried to open or delete any file or document. After a little digging around I found a solution to this problem. Every Windows operating system has a 256-260 character file/path limit. The file didn’t have a longer name than 256 characters, but the file was buried underneath many folders with big names. I tried to right-click the file and select rename but I didn’t have that option. I couldn’t copy or cut the file to another location.

How To Fix "File Name Too Long" ERROR?

Go one folder above where your document is stored. Rename that folder to something shorter as much as possible (you could use only 1 character). This should allow you to open the file or document without error. Now change the file or document to a shorter name. Change the folder back to the original name. Check if you can still open your file. If you can still open the file, then you’re good! If you can’t open the file yet, move the folder to another location.

You didn't fix anything. You just renamed a file/folder. That's a weak band aid - not a fix to the character limitations.

You can try LongPathTool to fix this problem. It worked perfectly for me.

This problem can be easily handled and solved by using Gs Richcopy 360 or Long path tool.

I already know how to fix the problem by shrinking the name. but that does not fix the problem popping up on other files. This video is a waste of time.
