Leon Panetta, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, spoke Thursday on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, an evening focused on the future as Kamala Harris formally accepts her party’s nomination for president.

"[Harris] understands what our military is for. The role of our military is to defend us from foreign enemies," Panetta said. "It is not to threaten Americans, and it sure as hell isn't to put immigrants in camps."

Harris’ speech is her first official chance to offer her vision for the country to voters. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz formally accepted the vice presidential nomination the day before.
