Ian Explains: Is India a US ally? It's complicated | GZERO World

India's tradition of non-alignment is being tested as it refuses to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Whose side is India on? Well, it's complicated. Based on the plushest of red carpets that President Biden rolled out for the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his White House visit in June, one might think the two were the closest of allies. But India has a long history of what it used to call "strategic non-alignment" and now refers to as "multilateralism."

After enduring a century of British colonial rule, it’s understandable that Indians would bristle at being told to enter the fold of one global alliance or another, especially when one side includes their former colonizer. And Indians feel they shouldn’t have to hide behind anyone. This behemoth of a nation just overpassed China to become to most populous country on earth and its rapidly growing economy could overtake Germany and Japan’s within this decade.

The sustainability of that stance has been severely tested, however, in the wake of Delhi's refusal to explicitly condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and critics argue that it's long past time for India to pick a side.

While India refused to blame russia invasion of Ukraine. It is in same way Europe refused to blame Pakistan and China on attacking india.

India is a better and reliable partner. They are returning Russia’s 40 year old favor when Pakistan attacked them. It needs backbone, integrity and loyalty ❤

Never seen Switzerland being demonized so viciously for its neutral stance like what India is being subjected to right now

US support of Pakistan in war against India, denying others countries to deliver weapons and critical technologies to India, supporting Pakistan in UN in Kashmir, supporting Pakistan in 1971 war, supporting genocide of Bangladeshi people by Pakistan army, sending nuclear fleet at India's maritime boundaries while the Bangladeshi genocide was taking place, creating insurgency in Kashmir by supplying weapons and money to Pakistan to create Mujahedeen etc.

Ian, it’s simple: India’s 2 principles
are “ No alliances” and “Multipolar planet”. Bless them.

As an American I hope India will continue to develop, they are such an acient civilization, it only seems right for them to take their place on the world stage. I hope that as a democracy they will find that their interests converge with the west, and I think they will, and we can move forward with a better relationship. But that will also require understanding on both sides to happen.

No we're not. We are a strategic partner based on mutual growth.
We know what the word 'ally' means in the white House.

India remind me a Northern kingdom from Game of thrones. Once a star of the world then Struggle a lot, humiliated a lot, used by people a lot, and last become independent, powerful, principle.

We need more neutral countries like India to balance out the power struggle between china and US. Not every country has ambitions to dominate the world like US and China. India believes in a very ancient concept called vasudev kutumbakam meaning the world is one family. India has never actively attacked any country in last 1000 years unlike other superpowers. Never bullied anyone, never misused their powers and always helped everyone without asking much in return. The world has still not shown the respect it deserves. But we all know good guys are not respected that much anyways in geopolitics its all about who has waged more wars and who has the capability to kill as many people if the war happens.

I don't think India is going to be a US ally when US doesn't even acknowledge the territorial claims and refuse usage of the proper full map to show India. 🤷🏾‍♂️

India do not want to be a vassals states of the US ( The EU is the vassal state of the US - no doubt about this) and China and rightly so. It is important that India has its own strategic policies and stays independent.

India drives a courageous path unlike most other countries, India stands alone for its own benefit. That means it gets to reap the benefits as it is the case with Russia cheap oil and USA economic trade, but in case of India being in the place of Ukraine, under attack from a foreign power, it would fight alone with no support.

The map you used in 4:25 is a legally correct map of India (as JnK province was legally annexed to India by the the then ruler Maharaja Hari Singh due to the evil act of Pakistan army led invasion on his province)… and just guess what happens if all that land illegally grabbed or claimed by China and Pakistan really merged with India? We had a direct route to explore or trade to Central Asia and so to the east Europe and from Aksai Chin to Tibet…. But But But despite our Indian leadership told the world our stand with Non-alignment in Cold War situation during those times US constantly sidelined Indian interests and supported Pakistan (as ally) and China (as balancing country) to take a stand against soviet Rus 😢… for what? US pushed India towards USSR we not even have border with USSR and well Soviet Rus helped us in our grave poverty by installing major industries to boost economy and many things but due to this, our dependence on them was clear on many thing… even during 1971 Bangladesh liberation war US acted against India even when Indians were not the aggressor and supported evil Pakistan when Pakistan bleed their own countrymen! So it is complicated as we learn a lot from US and so we agree to disagree with them on many things but we are solely bonded by interests ☮️

India wants to do business and cooperate with the US, but India does not want to be an ally of anybody in the sense of loosing its freedom to do what is in India's interest and instead doing what is the interest of the US. What is so difficult to understand? The difficulty to understand this simple position is a sign of US arrogance.
