this would never be allowed today, but when I was in middle school my dad(chemist) came into to demonstrate dropping a block of potassium into water. It was a much larger piece than here and it was dropped from a string after he moved back about 50 feet. Fell into the bucket of water, spun around in flames for a few seconds, then exploded large enough to rattle the windows of the courtyard we were in. It was awesome.

basically when sodium or potassium react with water they form their respective oxides which then dissolve in water to form their hydroxides while hydrogen gas is released as K and Na displace it form water. now this reaction is exothermic hence, heat is generated which burns the hydrogen gas .
