Potassium in Water (reaction only)

preview_player
Показать описание
NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: Potassium always seems to react particularly violently; 2K + 2H2O → 2KOH + H2. It may just be that we use bigger lumps of it or perhaps the melting point is just right for the metal to begin melting when the reaction is already going strongly.

Ive never run across their shortened "reaction only" videos before, I could watch these all day long.

At the chemistry lesson in primary school I was asked by the teacher to hold a glass bowl of water so everyone could see, while she TOSSED SOME POTASSIUM IN IT!
Obviously she knew what she was doing. She used small enough lump so it just made some hissing noise. She made her point though, I remember the reaction till today, despite I'm not a chem professional. ;)

Man, it's amazing how instant that reaction is.

Radial blur in the thumbnail before it was a staple of image fry. Brady was ahead of his time

I think Neil is the Chuck Norris of chemistry. Thanks, Neil, for putting yourself at risk for us.

Dear lord, you'd have to lower it with an automatic crane and run like hell to survive that XD

The potassium in bananas isn't elemental potassium like what Neil throws in the water here; it has bonded with other elements.

Hey Brady could you guys do a video on the "Pharaoh's Serpent" reaction? Probably the most bizarre chemical reaction I've ever seen...

I like how they introduced the rubidium using a long string and a hammer... but just tossed the potassium in casually.

Something like that, if you watch the full video I think it becomes clear that the potassium got stuck in the glass ampoule and therefore only a very small portion of the total reacted in each moment.

I think it's the joy of making it out the other side in one piece.

If they want to do this, a single blast on the weekend is the way to go, at least for me. It hides everything else I'm subscribed to, but there isn't much of that on the weekend anyway.

yay our science teacher did this in the classroom....then told us not to tell anyone about it since it damaged the ceiling tiles... If you go lower down the period table in the alkali metals doesn't it get more powerful? I think we tried to use a rubidium or something outside in a puddle but it didn't work :(
