Fan Service is a tool. Like any tool it is neither good or bad. What is good or bad, is how a tool is used.

As soon as CBS and Paramount put guidelines on fan films, that was the moment that they truly stopped caring about their target audience.

Michael Dorn is such a great actor, and a treasure in everything he's in.
He can think for himself, and he can say the most outlandish things with a completely straight face.
I wish him nothing less than happiness in life.

AMEN, the Starfleet series and Section 31 film are not wanted.

It's almost like Picard wasn't replaced with a robot.

If Worf had an issue with copy Data, would he not also have an issue with copy Picard?

There is a place for fan service and callbacks in entertainment, particularly in franchises with long histories. The trick is not to overdo it.

The Star Trek DS9 episode 'Trials and Tribble-ations' is an example of near perfectly executed fan service and 'member berries' honouring the legacy of Star Trek.

Fan service can be done well, when there’s respect.
It’s hard to tell nowadays because of corporate speech and “modern audiences”

All you saw from episode 1 was member berry after member berry.

The use of memberberries in a "few" of its episodes? Memberberries is what this show was entirely made of -- with a mix of a thinly stretched out plot line which made little sense. Without the memberberries, this season was almost as bad as seasons 1 & 2. And it could be argued "worse" due to the complete dismantling and dumbing down of the TNG characters. And Worf was the worst of the lot. A pacifist ninja who decapitates people and wants to send their heads to his friends. Worf, with such classic lines as, "I like swords." and "I'll make it a threesome". Are you kidding me?!!

If Worf feels like that about Data, he would feel the same about... PICARD!

A Star Trek test, a Star Wars test, a LOTR test, anyone who is writing anything about any of those three need to prove they know and love the material and will work to make something that fits in those universes.

They don’t necessarily have to be a Star Trek fan to tell a good story whether it’s Star Trek or not. Nicholas Meyer is a good example of this. Until he was approached to do the second film he hadn’t seen TOS, but he did watch it for research. And because he’s familiar with how storytelling works each film that he’s been involved in (2, 4, and 6) have worked well.

Trust me, as a veteran all you do when you get together with your fellow former service members is relive old memories. What makes us human and not like the rest of our animal counter-parts is our immense capacity to remember and share that experience with those who were there.

If something relies on it's fan service, but doesn't offer much else, yes it is worth criticism.
If something has fan service and also offers its own quality additions, then fan service is a good thing, extra bonus. ☕🐾

For me, the real Data is also dead. Worf's right

I think you are forgetting that Patrick Stewart himself had a huge influence on Picard Season 1 and Season 2. He didn't want a reunion with old TNG cast members. He wanted Picard doing his own thing on solo adventures with a new team.

Patrick only backed down when he saw how awful S1 and S2 were received by general public.

Axanar is a great example of Fan Service

Dave, you're obviously entitled to your opinion. However, if you can't see how contrived the plot was just to insert all of the fan service, then you really need to expand your exposure to literary works. This entire season was the equivalent to a below-average fanfic.

There is a balance that should be maintained when inserting call-backs and related fan items. IMO, that balance was never established, and it went overboard.
